The African-American Heritage Society of Charles County, Inc., is a non-profit organization founded in 1974 by Veronica Coates and the late William A. Diggs. The Society is dedicated to preserving, documenting, and exhibiting the contributions of African Americans to the community, to the nation, and to mankind.

The Society has sponsored historical exhibitions at the Smithsonian, various churches, schools, colleges, and libraries in Charles County as well as throughout the state of Maryland. In 1987, the Society spear-headed the drive to honor the first co-explorer to the North Pole, a Charles County native, Matthew Henson.
