4th Floor Artists, Inc.

We are a non profit group of 80 plus artists renting studio space in 2 neighboring buildings in Rockland. We also have a Gallery fully sponsored and supported by the 4th floor artists and it is located on the 1st floor of the Wright building.

In the early 1990s several artists created studio space on the 4th floor of the F.L. & J.C. Codman factory in Rockland, MA. Eventually more and more artists were drawn to the building. It was a loosely knit association of diverse artists that has come to be known as the 4th floor artists. The name coming from the fact that the artists were all on the 4th floor at that time. In the mid 1990s the group became incorporated as a non-profit organization with roughly 40 members and grew to over 100 as businesses left the building and new artists moved in.

In the fall of 2006 the Codman building was sold to a developer and soon the artists needed to relocate. Many found space in the ET Wright Building and others found space in the Sandpaper Factory, both buildings in Rockland, and others went back to home studios. The group now numbers 70+ with more coming in when space is available. They are a dynamic group of painters, sculptors, printmakers, photographers, interior designers, jewelry makers, weavers, fine metalsmiths, graphic designers, and performers.

The new locations have enabled the artists to stay together as a non- profit, to work independently and to interact within a creative community. The non profit status allows the group to apply for grants to sustain several of their activities. The group is governed by a board of directors.

The 4th floor artists is a vital and growing artists community on the South Shore.
