Nowashe Village is proud to announce that the renowned Horse Hill Singers will be performing live on Indigenous Peoples Day, Monday, October. 10th. The Horse Hill Singers kick off celebrations at 12:30 p.m. with the Round Dance and Intertribal Singing.

All are welcome to participate in the Round Dance!

October is American Archives Month

The National Archives is celebrating American Archives Month throughout October. Explore their collection of blog posts, Pieces of History, dozens of online exhibits, and resources highlighting the work of their staff, along with some special videos. Celebrate our Local Archives!

The mission of the Friends of Wood Memorial Library and Museum (FWML&M) is to provide literary, archival, historical, educational and cultural resources for the general public by actively collecting and preserving materials of local and regional significance, and to use these collections as a basis for research, exhibitions, and educational programming.

The Friends are also celebrating American Archives Month throughout October. Explore our collection of weekly Musings from Main, numerous online exhibits, and resources highlighting the work of our staff. Learn more about how our new research and reference library will make your local history accessible to you!

Did you know we offer the Library ARTpass for FREE admission to the Wadsworth Atheneum? Stop in during our open hours to borrow the Wadsworth Atheneum ARTpass. The ARTpass provides free general admission for two adults and two youth age 17 and younger. Please note there maybe additional admission fees for exhibits or special events.

South Windsor Cultural Arts

Moves to Evergreen Crossing

The beloved South Windsor Cultural Arts (SWCA) concert series has emerged from the pandemic with an incredible 2022-2023 concert season, but it is returning to a NEW VENUE. SWCA has moved their beautiful Steinway to their new home, the Evergreen Crossings Retirement Community in South Windsor, and will be holding their FREE monthly concert Series at this new venue. The Friends wish them the best at their new location and will continue to promote their concerts on our website.

Exploring the Taino:  Genocide, Continuation
with Dr. Wilfredo Nieves

The Tainos welcomed the Europeans and met disappointment, exploitation and loss.  The experience of this encounter and the Taino experience today will be discussed.  Includes a brief tour of Nowashe.

Light refreshments from 5-6 followed by a presentation by artist, Nayana LaFond creator  of the exhibit “Portraits in RED, The Missing & Murdered Indigenous Peoples painting project”.

Free Celebration on Indigenous Peoples' Day

Celebrations will include performances by the Horse Hill Singers and presentations by renowned Indigenous Chef, Sherry Pocknett (Mashpee Wampanoag), and Wingmasters, along with the emotional exhibit Portraits in RED, a Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Project.  Details available at www.Nowashe.org.

Native American Heritage Month

Join Taylor Statis as she explores the traditional foodways of the Herring Pond Wampanoag Tribal Nation, including hunting, gathering and agricultural practices. Taylor will discuss which wild plants, seeds, nuts and fruits were gathered, and the major fish and fauna hunted. The smoking and drying of foods for preservation also will be discussed.

Today, Indigenous quillwork is undergoing a revival, after having come close to being a lost art. Explore the fascinating history and practice of quillwork with Miciah Stasis (Herring Pond Wampanoag) who celebrates and maintains this traditional cultural practice today in her modern art works. Miciah also will discuss the methodology of creating quillwork pieces and the decorative use of natural dyes.

A Native American Winter with Dr. Lucianne Lavin

Connecticut’s Indigenous Communities were outdoor peoples who not only survived but thrived under adverse weather conditions. This PowerPoint presentation describes the traditional Winter activities of Native American before the coming of European settlers to Connecticut. Register online.
