Wichita Public Library has joined the Family Place LibrariesTM network that offers an array of enjoyable and free programs and services for babies, toddlers, preschoolers, parents and caregivers. Foundations for learning are built during the first three years of life, and the Library has created space, resources and educational opportunities to help parents and caregivers connect, discover, learn and thrive with their child.

The Family Place is located inside the Children’s Pavilion at the Advanced Learning Library, 711 W. 2nd St.

“Play is how young children learn about themselves and their world,” said Savannah Ball, Education and Engagement Manager for Wichita Public Library. “It prepares them for reading, math and science and promotes healthy social and emotional development.”

Family Place builds on the knowledge that good health, early learning, parental involvement and supportive communities play a critical role in young children’s growth and development.

Wichita Public Library’s Family Place is a community destination providing:

A specially designed welcoming space in the Children’s Pavilion for families with young children to explore, play, share books and learn together.
Collections of books, toys, music and multimedia materials for babies, toddlers, parents and service providers.
Library staff specially trained in early literacy, child development and family support.

“The Family Place interactive space emphasizes the importance of play in early learning and the importance of parents and caregivers to promote and participate in children’s play,” said Ball.

The Family Place LibrariesTM model is now in more than 500 libraries in 32 states serving thousands of young children and their parents/caregivers. This expanded service is made possible with support from the Wichita Public Library Foundation.
