COMING NEXT YEAR:

200th Anniversary of the Whistler House Museum of Art 1823-2023

Built in 1823 by the innovators of the American Industrial Revolution, the Whistler House Museum of Art has stood for two hundred years as a beacon of engineering and art in Lowell. Home to the Chief Engineers of the Locks and Canal Company, tenants such as Paul Moody, George Washington Whistler, and James Francis oversaw the construction of canals, railway systems, and the city of Lowell itself. In 1834, the famous American artist James McNeill Whistler was born in the house – in time, he would change the world of art forever.

Today, the building serves as the headquarters of the Lowell Art Association, Inc., the oldest incorporated art association in the United States. The Whistler House Museum of Art is known internationally for its distinguished collection of 19th and early 20th century representational American art, including works by James McNeill Whistler, John Singer Sargent, Arshile Gorky, Aldro Thompson Hibbard, and many more New England artists.

In 2023, the Museum will celebrate the 200th anniversary of the historic home, honoring the engineers, artists, and workers of Lowell who shaped the city into the thriving, diverse community we live and work in today.

Stay tuned for more information on the events and festivities – the celebration begins in 2023!
