Casablanca

Railroad Square Cinema

7:00 p.m.

$10.50 adults, $8.50 students and seniors

This film is eligible for the Youth Arts Access Fund.

“Play it again, Sam.” We'll play it again here on the last night in Railroad Square’s current home, coming full circle with the film that opened Railroad Square in 1978, and leading us into our new, stunning cinemas at the Paul J. Schupf Art Center in downtown Waterville, opening on December 17. A true Hollywood classic that miraculously embodies and promotes the seeming best qualities of both Hollywood and the country itself in the midst of a cataclysmic world war, Casablanca is what it is because of its exotic locale and thriller/romance genre covering an idealistic heart; because of its magnetic stars, Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman; and because of its ingenious script, filled with one unforgettable line after another. We’ll always have Casablanca.

Sarah Cain: Hand In Hand

Colby College Museum of Art

Running through Sunday, December 11

FREE

For the Colby Museum, artist Sarah Cain created hand in hand, an on-site painting covering the full expanse of the William D. Adams Gallery floor and creating an environment for an arrangement of the artist’s paintings on canvas and painted furniture. In a space that functions as the gateway to the galleries, this ambitious installation is immersive and reorienting, manifesting the synergy of togetherness—a whole greater than the sum of its parts—through diverse but unified imagery.

Do The Right Thing

Railroad Square Cinema

Monday, November 21

7:00 p.m.

$10.50 adults, $8.50 students and seniors

This film is eligible for the Youth Arts Access Fund.

Though Spike Lee first came to moviegoers’ attention with She's Gotta Have It, it was Do the Right Thing that really defined him as a filmmaker and unofficial cultural spokesperson. Finally, an independent black filmmaker was able to bring community and viewpoints to a huge audience only the cinema could harness. No coincidence that Do the Right Thing had that force: it was and remains a powerful statement about race and racism in the U.S., through the lens of one sweltering summer day in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Railroad Square Cinema

Tuesday, November 22

7:00 p.m.

$10.50 adults, $8.50 students and seniors

This film is eligible for the Youth Arts Access Fund.

Too popular to even be considered a “cult” film, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, with its campy horror-movie take-offs, audience singalong soundtrack and prompts, Meat Loaf crash-landing, and the “sweet transvestite” central character, Dr. Frank N. Furter, unforgettably incarnated by Tim Curry, was a one-of-a-kind phenomenon that’s still going. “Give yourself over to absolute pleasure.”
