“Veterans Day in Downtown Massillon” Tour

Walk among downtown Massillon’s charming historic buildings and through its beautiful Veterans Memorial Park on a guided downtown walking tour with local historian Margy Vogt on Veterans Day, Friday, November 11, beginning at 2:00 p.m.  The tour will begin outside the Massillon Museum and encompass about eight blocks.

Special attention will be paid to Veteran’s Memorial Park and stories of patriotism and heroism in honor of Veterans Day. Fallen police officers and firefighters will be remembered. Learn about the big flag that flies atop the city and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Viaduct, and see Lincoln Way refreshed and lined with flags and veteran banners.

Walkers will also learn general local history—fires, floods, streetcars, gambling, a gangster funeral, one of the state’s first speeding tickets, an airplane built in a second-story hotel room, and Massillon’s soap box derby. Tales about Massillon’s 196-year-old downtown will include the canal, early businesses, murals, National Register sites, community leaders, and celebrations.

The tour is wheelchair accessible. The $10 fee may be paid at the beginning of the tour. Reservations are not necessary. Free parking is available on city streets and lots. In case of rain, the tour will be cancelled—call 330.844.1525 for last-minute weather checks.

Vogt’s books, Massillon: Reflections of a Community and Fourth Street: A Century of History and Design, will be available for purchase before and after the tour.
