Some say the quickest way to get things done is to ask the busiest people you know to help. The Tarrytown community has just that in Dean Gallea and Rachel Tieger. This dynamic duo serve as the co-chairs of Tarrytown Environmental Advisory Committee (TEAC), an all-volunteer-lead council that promotes ecological sustainability through public education. TEAC reflects the interests and talents of members promoting many different committees and projects.

Dean and Rachel are involved in an assortment of committees and projects in Tarrytown. They each devote between 20 and 30 hours a week to various volunteer efforts, and are known for their creativity and the passion that they bring to pressing conservation issues in Tarrytown. Their mantra for getting community members involved is to “give first, teach second, and then ask for help.”

Recently, they spearheaded an EnergySmart Homes Campaign with the goal of sharing information about geothermal energy, heat pumps, and insulation with area homeowners. They were awarded a specially-funded Sustainable Westchester grant and were instrumental in convincing the Village of Tarrytown to waive permitting fees for these clean energy projects.

Dean Gallea, who has lived in Tarrytown for more than 30 years, worked as an engineer and program leader for electronic product testing at Consumer Reports. Currently, he serves as the President of the Warner Library Board, a community board member of Tarrytown Music Hall, and a member of Scenic Hudson Trails, as well as other various roles.

Rachel Tieger worked for 25 years in the wholesale wine business and lived in a number of places before returning to her roots in the Hudson Valley. In addition to TEAC, she is a member of the board of TaSH Farmers Market and is active with Democratic district leaders.

This past fall, Rachel cross-purposed her board activities when the TaSH Farmers Market hosted the Tarrytown Eco-Fair. This event successfully brought together numerous community sustainability organizations and local businesses to educate, network, and share ideas.

The Volunteer Spirit Awards is the premier volunteer recognition event in our region, with an expected attendance of 500 community leaders, business leaders, and elected officials.

Please join us for a celebration of community and kindness on Friday, May 5th at the Westchester Marriott in Tarrytown from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM.
