Arts and Entertainment

August 3, 2023

From: University of Michigan Museum of Natural History

This edition of Museum@Home is all about speciation—the evolutionary process by which distinct species come to be. Step 1: Explore an example of how two species might emerge using an infographic created by U-M undergraduates Abigail Pino, Ahsan Ahmed, & Jake McDevitt. Step 2: Visit the museum and journey through nearly four billion years of life on Earth to discover how some of the earliest organisms changed our world and how evolution connects all living things!

Starting in September, Museum@Home will be issued on the third Wednesday each month and will alternate between family and adult editions.

Meet scientists and learn about their research

Speciation Infographic

Audience: Children and Family
Grades: 6-8, 9-12
Duration: 5-minute read

Have you ever tried eating soup with a fork? You can probably imagine how that would work out (not great!). Check out the Darwin's Finches: Explaining Speciation infographic to learn how finding the right tool for the job drives evolution. Want the scoop on how scientists decide if an animal they find is a new species? Visit the Investigate Nature Lab at UMMNH and try the activity “How to Discover a New Species.” Don’t delay! This activity is being retired in the fall, so start your summer of speciation exploration today!

Abigail Pino, Ahsan Ahmed, and Jake McDevitt created this comic for BIO 173, an introductory Biology lab class. Using museum exhibits as inspiration, BIO 173 students created comics and infographics to share foundational concepts in evolution with museum audiences.
