Government and Politics

Say Goodbye to Summer; Hello to Fall Activities

Well, it's over. It's been hot and steamy and way too dry for gardens, but summer was a lot of fun in Norfolk. Now it's back to more serious business. The transition has cut into the recreational calendar, but there are still activities on the horizon including the final Friday Night on the Green, consisting of a concert by Michael Cobb and a community picnic. Two new art shows are opening at the Norfolk Hub and the library, where the Library Associates will host an artist's reception Sunday for Heather Neilson. Those with questions for officials at Botelle Elementary School can attend a Q&A session after the Board of Finance meeting Tuesday.
And for more about what’s happening, visit norfolkct.org's calendar section, your daily directory to Norfolk living. Be sure to forward this newsletter to a friend so they can sign up for a free subscription.

"Along the Waterline" Opens at Norfolk Hub

"Along the Waterline, Photographs of Boat Hulls" by Richard Alan Cohen will be on display at the Norfolk Hub, 2 Station Place, through October 31 and may be viewed during regular opening hours. Boats that sit in boat yards are often encrusted with evidence of where the boat has been. In developing “Waterline” images, Cohen shares his own imagination and provides the seed for each viewer to form his or her own remembered landscapes. Ten percent of any sales will be donated to Assist-Ukraine.

Summer Season Ends Friday with Community Picnic

Norfolk’s Friday Nights on the Green concludes its 2022 season this week with music by Michael Cobb and a community picnic hosted by Norfolk Foundation. At 6:00 p.m. everyone in the community is invited to come to the Village Green for two hours to enjoy music and food.

Reception Sunday for Library Art Show

Heather Neilson’s latest work, “Transcending Ground,” a series of abstract paintings exploring human relationships to the landscape, is on display at the Norfolk Library during September. The opening reception is Sunday, September 4, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., hosted by the Library Associates. The paintings suggest a sense of spaciousness, serenity and feeling rooted. Neilson builds many layers of oil and cold wax medium to achieve a sense of depth and richness of color. The show is on view September 3-29. For more information, click here.

Registration for the annual Haystack Challenge, sponsored by the Norfolk Land Trust, will close Thursday, September 8, at 11:59 p.m. The races, consisting of a grueling half-marathon as well as 10K and 5K races, will be held September 10. For more details, click here.

Book Drive for Young Readers Planned

Read To Grow , an agency that promotes language skills and literacy for children, beginning at birth and that supports parents as their babies’ first teachers, is collecting books September 24 at the Norfolk Farmers Market, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Books for newborns through young adults–especially board books, picture books, bilingual books and those with characters of color–are desired. Books may also be left at the Norfolk Hub.

Municipal Meeting

It will be hard to keep up with municipal meetings this week. The Board of Education meets at 6:00 p.m., Tuesday (followed by a question-and-answer session); the Farmers Market Committee, Tuesday, 6:00 p.m.; Town Website Committee, Tuesday, 5:00 p.m., Workplace Health and Safety Committee, Wednesday, 1:00 p.m.; Board of Selectmen, Wednesday, 4:30 p.m.; Economic Development Commission, Thursday, 5:00 p.m.; Rails to Trails, Thursday, 6:00 p.m., and the Board of Assessment Appeals, Saturday, 9:00 a.m. Things change and sometimes meetings are cancelled, so check here before heading out the door.

And Coming Up Next ...
With the transition of sending kids back to school over and memories of summer vacation fading, the tempo of community life will quicken again in Norfolk. Next week will bring a reminder of the fun Infinity Hall concerts can be when Todd Snider and Lilly Winwood perform Friday night. The Norfolk Land Trust will hold its Haystack Challenge, and a TED Talk will look at "What it Takes to Change A Mind" (an intriguing topic in these rigidly aligned times). Municipal meetings slated are the Conservation Commission, Inland Wetlands Agency; Planning and Zoning Commission, and the Board of Finance.
Visit the town website's calendar for all the other events planned. And be sure to visit Weekend in Norfolk's YouTube channel where you'll find tours, music, art, kids' activities and a lot more.
