Norfolk firefighters worked against time this week to bring home a new fire truck from snowy Minnesota. The town has hosted a second town meeting to update residents about the gas spill and churches announced their Christmas schedules.

Shiny New Truck Takes Up Residence in Firehouse

Gas Spill Town Meeting Tuesday

A Town Meeting was held Tuesday at Botelle School to give the public the latest information about remediation efforts following the November 5 gas spill. Experts gave residents a detailed account of efforts being made to monitor and remediate effects of the spill, which released 8,200 gallons of gas onto Route 44 on November 5
Jeffrey King of Verdantas told residents that about 600 tons of soil have been removed and about 90,000 gallons of possibly contaminated water have been syphoned off.
Three drinking water wells were tested and found to be clean, but extensive dredging of contaminated soil was undertaken near the site of the release. To date, no indication has been found of contamination in the Blackberry River, but Zachary Smith of Verdantas, a company monitoring the path of the release, said future testing may go deeper.
Work will continue into the spring.

Local Churches Announce Christmas Schedule

The Catholic and Congregational churches have announced their Christmas schedules. The parish of St. Martin of Tours will hold Vigil Masses Christmas Eve at St. Joseph’s Church in Canaan at 4 p.m. and Immaculate Conception in Norfolk at 7 p.m. Christmas Day Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Church in Lakeville at 9 a.m. Read more
