Magic, Meditation and Immigration

An eclectic array of activities is on the horizon this week, ranging from a Magic Show at the Norfolk Library to meditations in a meadow. Altan will bring the sounds of County Donegal to Infinity Hall and local resident and German immigrant Birol Bahadir will tell of his 15-year-long fight to live in the United States.

Meditation in a Meadow

Meditation will be practiced Saturday, October 22, at 9:00 a.m. on the City Meadow nature path. The program will begin with a brief introduction to walking meditation, followed by 30-40 minutes of silent walking meditation. Anyone unable to walk for that length of time is invited to sit on the City Meadow Overlook benches as an alternative. Meet at Robertson Plaza. Register here

Altan Coming To Infinity Saturday

Infinity Hall will present the Irish band, Altan, Saturday, October 22, at 8:00 p.m. The group brings with it the rich musical tradition of County Donegal. On one of his many visits to the Donegal Gaeltacht of Gaoth Dobhair, Belfast-born flute player Frankie Kennedy met fiddler and singer Mairead Ni? Mhaonaigh, sparking a deep musical connection, marriage in 1981, and a journey that took them all over the world. For tickets and information, click here.

Seeking Inner Calm? Join this Discussion Group

Kelly Kandra Hughes is presenting "Outer Order, Inner Calm," this fall in a virtual program sponsored by the Norfolk Library. Participants will read a chapter each week of Gretchen Rubin’s "Outer Order, Inner Calm: Declutter & Organize to Make Room for Happiness," implement the strategies that most resonate, and then come together via Zoom to discuss progress and insights. Discussions will take place from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Mondays through November 28. Copies can be requested through inter-library by contacting the library's front desk at [email protected] or 860-542-5075, ext. 2. Click here for more information and to register for a zoom link.

Caught Between Two Worlds

In celebration of National Immigrants Day on Monday, October 24, 5:30 p.m., the Norfolk Library welcomes local resident and German immigrant, Birol Bahadir, to tell his story. Bahadir will speak about his dream of living in the United States with his family, and how everything went wrong, leading to 15 years of living in fear of being deported. Now with his green card, Bahadir recently published his autobiography “Between 2 Worlds.” Register here for this program.

Magician Coming to Corner Club

Professional magician and balloon sculptor Ed Popielarczyk will be at the library Wednesday, October 26, at 3:45 p.m. for a magic Corner Club. Popielarczyk has been entertaining children and family audiences for more than 35 years. He doesn’t just do tricks, he tells stories that revolve around each trick, engaging children in the process. Register here. Children will need a note to get off the bus at the library.

Truffaut Film To Be Screened at Library

The Norfolk Library will present a screening of "The 400 Blows" Thursday, October 27, at 7:00 p.m. The film, made by Francois Truffaut, will be introduced by French writer/director/editor Diego Ongaro. One the defining films of the French New Wave, "The 400 Blows" is based on Truffaut’s own childhood and interpreted by Jean Pierre Leaud. It is a moving film about the difficult life of a young teenager in 1950's Paris, and it is considered one of the masterpieces of French cinema. Register here.

Youth Programs Considered at Library

"Miss Eileen" Fitzgibbon is surveying the interest in two new youth programs at Norfolk Library. Under consideration are a Pre-teen with a Twist program for fifth and sixth graders, and a book club for third and fourth graders. Those interested in more information should contact Fitzgibbon at [email protected].

Candy Sought for Trick or Treating

As in recent years, Halloween trick or treating will be limited to Maple Avenue and its feeder streets. Candy donations are being accepted for homes along those streets that will greet the little "ghoulies and ghosties and long-leggedy beasties." Parents are asked to donate one bag of candy per child who will be on those streets. Donations can be left at the Botelle School office or at the post office.

Municipal Meetings

There are no meetings next week.

And Coming Up Next ...
Next week will bring a fine mixture of soulfulness, as residents are given opportunities to explore their inner psyches, and visitations from the spirit world. The Mindfulness and Inner Calm series will continue, even as the town embraces the dark side with a Spooktacular at Botelle School and annual Halloween festivities. The Norfolk Library will underscore the spooky feelings with a movie by master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock. Jonathan Edwards will perform at Infinity Hall. Meetings include the Town Website Committee, Board of Education and Board of Selectmen.
Visit the town website's calendar for all the other events planned. And be sure to visit Weekend in Norfolk's YouTube channel where you'll find tours, music, art, kids' activities and a lot more.
