Indigenous People To Be Celebrated

As part of Indigenous Peoples Day, the Norfolk Library will welcome back Andes Manta, a colorful group that plays music drawn from Andean cultures. Mindfulness will be on the minds of residents as they continue an online series with Miranda Cook and residents will seek inner calm in an online discussion group with Kelly Kandra Hughes. Municipal meetings will be the City Meadow Committee and the Recreation Committee.

 Mindfulness Sessions Continue Online

The Mindfulness series started last summer at the Norfolk Library is continuing this fall online. In this series, mindfulness practitioner Miranda Lee teaches participants how to live a more mindful life and equips them with the tools they need to help build resilience against the challenges of day-to-day life. Some gentle movement (no special clothing or equipment required) is incorporated into the course. This course will be offered via Zoom from 9:15-10:15 a.m. on Fridays. Anyone can join at any time. Register here.

Andes Manta to Perform Saturday at Library

In recognition of Indigenous Peoples Day, the Norfolk Library welcomes the renowned South American musicians of Andes Manta Saturday, October 15, at 5:00 p.m. to present a free concert of traditional Andean music. This acclaimed group has performed for audiences in venues from Carnegie Hall to the Discovery Channel. Members play more than 35 different instruments ranging from the six-foot-long panpipe, to the Quena (Andean flute), to goat toenail rattles and Spanish guitars.  Register here.

Book Group to Read "Fathers and Sons"

The Norfolk Book Group, sponsored by the Norfolk Library and led by Mark Scarbrough, is reading novels by Ivan Turgenev. Next up is "Fathers and Sons" (1862) on October 20, followed by "Spring Torrents" (1872), November 20, and "Virgin Soil" (1877), December 13. The group meets via Zoom, with a morning and evening session on select Thursdays. To get a Zoom invitation, click here.

"Outer Order, Inner Calm" Discussion Offered Virtually

Many Americans say they feel overwhelmed by clutter, but it can be difficult to know how to pare back. Kelly Kandra Hughes will present "Outer Order, Inner Calm" this fall in a virtual program sponsored by the Norfolk Library. Participants will read a chapter each week of Gretchen Rubin’s "Outer Order, Inner Calm: Declutter & Organize to Make Room for Happiness," implement the strategies that most resonate, and then come together via Zoom to discuss progress and insights. Discussions will take place from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Mondays, October 17, through November 28. Copies can be requested through inter-library by contacting the library's front desk at [email protected] or 860-542-5075, ext. 2. Click here for more information and to register for a zoom link.

"Coffee and Shakespeare" Continues

Join lecturer Melissa Cook in the library conference room for "Coffee and Shakespeare" from 9:30-11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 18. She is leading a seminar on Shakespeare‘s "Twelfth Night." The final meeting date is October 25. A screening of "Twelfth Night" will follow the seminar series at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 1. Cook has presented multiple papers at the Shakespeare Association of America, the 16th Century Studies Association, and the Shakespeare Conference at Hofstra University. Clothes Closet Seeks Warm Winter Wear

With winter on the horizon the Clothes Closet at Battell Chapel is looking for donations of cool/cold weather items. Please do not donate shoes with heels. It is helpful if sets of sheets are clipped together with a label stating the size. In addition, the need for food donations at the Food Pantry continues. Two-percent milk is particularly needed.
