Leave the Leaves
A message from the Conservation Commission
Consider leaving the leaves in the garden beds - they provide protection from cold and predators for many beneficial larvae and eggs over the winter.
When can the leaves and stems be cleaned from the garden?
Some may naturally compost and improve the soil.
Others can be removed after several consecutive days when the temperature is 50 degrees or more. Think late April or early May.
For the lawn, if there are less than several inches of leaves, mow the leaves and let the leaf bits settle into the grass over a few days. The leaf bits will compost into the soil and serve as a great fertilizer for the lawn!
