Located in the northern portion of the Phoenix Metropolitan area, the Town of Cave Creek is a small but growing town that is proud of its Western heritage. We pride ourselves on being innovative, inclusive, and dedicated to driving change. The Utilities Department manages the water treatment and distribution systems for Cave Creek. The Town also operates the Desert Hills Water System, which supplies water to an unincorporated area west of Town limits. Currently there are just under 5,000 active water accounts in both water systems. The Cave Creek water system consists of a 3 million gallon per day (MGD) surface water facility that treats and delivers Central Arizona Project (CAP) water.

POSITION PURPOSE

The Water Treatment Operator III performs a variety of skilled technical duties and tasks in the operation, maintenance and testing of the Town’s water treatment plant.  Monitor plant functions, collects in-house samples, performs laboratory testing, and adjust chemical feed rates and equipment to adhere to regulatory qualifications to produce safe drinking water. Shift work, weekends, standby, and call-back duty may be required.

This position has no supervisory responsibilities and works under the general direction of the Water Treatment Plant Supervisor.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING OR EXPERIENCE

A Grade 2 Water treatment operator certification from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) at hire. Obtain a Grade 3 water treatment certification within one year of hire.
2 to 5 years of experience in the field of water quality or water operations preferred.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Valid, unrestricted Arizona Driver’s license.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND ABILITIES

Make regular rounds of the plant performing a variety of duties pertaining to water treatment and plant maintenance; observe variations in operating conditions and monitor plant functions by interpreting computer information SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) meters, gauges, graphs, and control panel readings as well as lab test results to determine processing requirements.  
Collect routine process and regulatory samples and perform a variety of laboratory tests; document results and take appropriate actions; enter data into a computer and compile readings and test results into hourly, daily, and monthly reports.
Operate valves, pumps, motors, and generators in controlling treatment processes; perform routine maintenance work on valves, chemical feed systems and related equipment as required.
Provides guidance and direction for entry level staff on plant operations, maintenance, and repair work.
Perform plant maintenance duties such as: grease chains, shafts, sprockets, rails, pipes and bearings; clean out basins and channels; paint and repair facility structures; inspect and adjust instrumentation to reflect lab test results; perform PM on chemical feed systems; repair piping, pumps and valves.
Maintain and clean plant facility and grounds.
Assist maintenance personnel in receiving and testing quality of chemical deliveries.
Respond to and communicate with supervisors and co-workers regarding present and potential problems and hazards.
Perform Confined Space Entry duties as entrant, attendant and/or Authorized Entry Supervisor as plant duties necessitate.
Monitor offsite facilities using SCADA system for pressure, flow rates, and tank levels. If a problem occurs, call field personnel to correct problem and report back to plant operator.
Performs other duties as assigned and may be called upon to assist other divisions within the Town.
