THE BEATLES AND BEYOND: BEGINNINGS OF PROGRESSIVE ROCK

On Monday, October 17 at 1:00pm at the Senior Center, join John Clark and his Great American Music Experience as he presents this music education program. In the mid-1960s, music producer George Martin was encouraging and guiding the Beatles into an adventurous experimentalism that used orchestration, electronics and exotic instrumentation and bringing them up to a level of serious artistry. In the wake of their crowning achievement, the conceptual Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, other groups like the Procol Harum, Moody Blues and the Nice all brought classical elements to their songs and concept albums. In the wake of these seminal groups came a full-scale trend and sub-genre dubbed progressive (also known as “prog”) rock. Its ranks included groups like Pink Floyd, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Yes, King Crimson, Genesis and Gentle Giant, who fell into two camps thematically, often using an entire album to make highly spiritual or heavily dystopian statements. The trend has continued to this day. Please register at 617-730-2770.

THE HISTORY OF HOWARD JOHNSON'S

On Wednesday, October 19 at 1:00pm at the Senior Center, join us for another interesting talk by Boston historian and author Anthony Sammarco! Howard Johnson created an orange-roofed empire of ice cream stands and restaurants that stretched from Maine to Florida, and all the way to the West Coast. With a reputation for good food at affordable prices, hungry customers would regularly return for more. The attractive white Colonial Revival restaurants, with eye-catching porcelain tile roofs, illuminated cupolas and sea blue shutters, were described in "Reader's Digest" in 1949 as the epitome of "eating places that look like New England town meeting houses dressed up for Sunday. Highlighted in television shows such as Mad Men and films Netflix' s 2019 The Irishman, it' s obvious that Howard Johnson's occupies an indelible and pleasant place popular culture. Mr. Sammarco will recount how Howard Johnson introduced twenty-eight flavors of ice cream, the "Tendersweet" clam strips, grilled frankforts and a menu of delicious and traditional foods that families eagerly enjoyed when they traveled. Ice cream will be served at the event! Please register at 617-730-2770.
