Monday, March 27

Are you the O.N.E? – Guilford County Schools is looking for Our Next Educator. Today, Human Resources representatives will answer questions, accept applications and interview for current and future teaching and substitute teaching positions. People who are interested in a career in education and have a college degree are encouraged to attend. Positions are available across all grade levels and signing bonuses of up to $20,000 are available for applicants who meet certain qualifications. The job fair is from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at the Fieldhouse of the Greensboro Coliseum complex.

Tuesday, March 28

USDA Chief Scientist Visit – The Chief Scientist at the USDA and the first Black woman to hold a degree in Paper Science will visit Guilford Elementary School in observance of National Nutrition Month. Dr. Chavonda Jacobs-Young is the Under Secretary of Research and Economics. Part of her role includes advancing agricultural research, innovation, data and Extension. During her visit, she will meet with students, nutrition staff and school leaders to gain their insight on access to safe, nutritious and affordable fresh food. The visit is from 11:30 am to 12:15 pm. A media Q&A will begin at noon.

Memory Project Community Night- For the last few weeks, students at Grimsley High School have been working on portraits of children in Syria for “The Memory Project.” The organization’s mission is to promote intercultural understanding and kindness between children across the world. Grimsley’s art students have completed their pieces and will hold a community night from 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm to showcase their work before the pieces are mailed to Syria.

FAFSA Helpline – Families and students needing assistance filling out the all-important FAFSA form can get help. Guilford Parent Academy and GCS Counseling Services will have a hotline for Title One Families to assist them with filling out the application. Staff will be on hand Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. to walk families through the process. The number is 336-370-3270.

Rankin Reads – Today, Rankin will hold its 9th annual “Rankin Reads” event. Several community members including the Mayor, Greensboro Police Chief and a County Commissioner will share their love of reading with students. The school’s curriculum team created the event as a way to build lasting and genuine relationships. The visits begin at 9:00 am and end at 10:30 am.

Multicultural Day – Volunteers from at least 14 countries will visit Pearce Elementary to celebrate the rich and diverse communities that make up their school population. From 8:00 am–noon, parents and volunteers will share artifacts, food, music, fun facts and dress in traditional attire as students stop by booths to learn new information and collect stamps on their passports. At 1:00 pm, students will showcase the country they’ve researched in a parade of nations.

Students Learn Money Secrets – 5th-grade students are learning the importance of financial literacy at an early age. Today, the district will kick off an exciting learning adventure at Brightwood Elementary School. Author, Bob Krumroy will be on campus to talk about his book “Zach & Thad Di$cover the 4 Money $ecret$.” Every 5th-grader in the district will receive the book and learn about how to save and use their money wisely. Representatives from Stearns Financial and State Employee’s Credit Union make a presentation and each student will receive a special surprise to commemorate what they’ve learned during the event. The event is from 10:00 am to 10:45 am.

Phoenix Ignite - Brown Summit Middle will host the Phoenix Ignite Conference. The day-long event allows students to explore a variety of interests. Speakers from a variety of industries will be on campus to host a session about their areas of expertise.

Student Selected to be a “Tech Girl” - Bailey Wright has been honored as 1 of 15 students in the United States and 1 of 126 in the world to participate in “Tech Girls” sponsored by the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.  The program will allow Bailey to travel, study and have a work-based learning opportunity in a major U.S. city. Bailey is part of the Transportation, Distribution and Logistics Academy Drone Pathway preparing to earn her FAA 107 Unmanned Drone License in April.  In addition, she is part of AP Capstone, DECA, Skills USA, UNICEF, and Social Change and Activism Club. She is also taking CCP courses at GTCC.

Fabulous Girls at Simkins – Young journalists are celebrating positive role models. Students at Simkins Elementary have started a new series for their school newscast called “Fabulous Girls at Simkins.” The students pick out female figures in their school community and interview them about what they do and how they work to be a positive influence on others.

Student Achieves Highest Growth in the State – Southeast Middle student, Jack Camacho, has done what many students hope for. He is the student with the highest growth in McGraw-Hill’s Achieve 3000 in the state! Achieve 3000 is a digital learning tool designed to engage students and accelerate and deepen learning. His teacher has had three students win this award.
