Benediction
Written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Terence Davies, BENEDICTION explores the turbulent life of WWI poet Siegfried Sassoon (Jack Lowden). The writer and soldier was a complex man who survived the horrors of fighting in the First World War and was decorated for his bravery but who became a vocal critic of the government’s continuation of the war when he returned from service. His poetry was inspired by his experiences on the Western Front, and he became one of the leading war poets of the era. Adored by members of the aristocracy as well as stars of London’s literary and stage world, he embarked on affairs with several men as he attempted to come to terms with his homosexuality. At the same time, broken by the horror of war, he made his life’s journey a quest for salvation, trying to find it within the conformity of marriage and religion.

Memoria

Shooting outside of Thailand — in faraway Colombia — for the first time in his career, Apichatpong Weerasethakul makes his English- and Spanish-language debut with Memoria, co-winner of the Jury Prize at Cannes in 2021. This latest masterpiece is mysterious and unique, even by the director’s standards, with an international cast of renowned actors including Tilda Swinton, Jeanne Balibar, and popular Colombian TV star Elkin Diaz.

Taking place in an atemporal, apolitical space, Memoria centres on Jessica (Swinton), a Scottish orchid farmer visiting her sister in Bogotá. One morning at daybreak, Jessica is torn from sleep by a loud bang reverberating like a large stone falling on metal. This haunting sound dispels her sleep for days, calling her identity into question and guiding her from recording studios to secluded villages.

All screenings of Memoria will be preceded by a 10-minute silent pre-show to bring audiences into the proper mindset for the film. Ads/trailers will be brief so please come on time!

NPR: 'Memoria' is a marvelously strange sonic detective story

The Automat
Americans once sipped coffee and ate pie around communal tables, sharing their struggles and dreams with strangers at Horn & Hardart’s iconic Automat. Lifetimes ago, these working-class palaces nourished a sense of unity that bridged the diversity of class, language, gender and race in the urban melting pots of the East Coast. Travel back in time to experience this unique piece of America's history, an exciting story and one that may seem strangely familiar. More than just entertainment, THE AUTOMAT is a parable of how we once dined happily together before turning to the isolated and unhappy experience offered by fast food, a bad deal that no amount of advertising can disguise.

Director Lisa Hurwitz will be joining us for another in-person Q&A, next Saturday, June 11th for the 6:20PM screening!
