Breaking Down the Portrait with Resident Artist Lily Morgan

Mondays | 3:45 - 5:45pm |

October 3rd - December 12th (10 weeks)

Free and open to students 13 - 18 yrs old

| 12 spots | Registration required

Through this course, students will discover the breadth of portraiture and learn technical skills to produce lifelike images. Students will tackle portraiture with a variety of approaches and a variety of media disciplines. Instructor Lily Morgan will introduce every medium with a demonstration and provide an exercise  for students so they can get comfortable using the particular medium before committing to a final project. To understand form and value, students will practice facial features and value transitions to gain confidence with each new medium before working with color. Achieving the look of skin through layers of cooler and warmer tones will help to achieve expectations and find common areas in all faces. Portraiture allows us to hear and tell a little bit of someone else's story that may not be revealed in a  photograph. Artists referenced throughout this class will be Gerhard Richter, Kehinde Whiley, and Lee Nowell Wilson. Final projects will be displayed at The Norwalk Art Space with a formal opening reception on December 15, 2022.

Tuesdays | 3:45 - 5:45pm |

September 27th - December 6th (10 weeks)

Free and open to students 11 - 14 yrs old

| 12 spots | Registration required

What do you think needs to change in today’s world? How can you create art that activates people to do something about it? Explore the issues you care about, and learn how to create something that engages your audience. Learning how to put creative energy into the things that worry you is healing and effective – and will give you the power to educate others and make some good changes! These are fierce skills! Students will learn that artists throughout history (such as Diego Rivera and Jacob Lawrence) as well as contemporary artists like Banksy, Marina Debris, and Manuel Oliver chose topics that directly affected them or those they cared about. Also, we have on-site artists whose art addresses social issues, and students  will see and discuss their work in person (Duvian Montoya, Elisha Brockenberry, Iyaba Mandingo, Jahmane). We will also study Youth Activists of today, such as Greta Thurnberg, LeSein Mutunkei, Isra Hirsi, and Gracie Pekrul (some may FaceTime with us)! Let your art release your power! Final projects will be displayed at The Norwalk Art Space with a formal opening reception on December 15, 2022.

The Art Of Prototyping Garments: Drawing, Sculpture, Writing and Garmentry with Resident Artist Elisha Brockenberry

Thursdays | 3:45pm - 5:45pm |

September 29th - December 8th (10 weeks)

Free and open to students 11 - 14 yrs old

Students will design and develop garment prototypes that express a concept of their own. Design development and use of traditional and unconventional garment construction methods will be explored throughout the semester. The designs will be based on materials on hand and will evolve using collage and painting to reimagine the final look. Students that attend all ten classes will gain experience with a variety of materials and can begin to construct their garments at home. Throughout the creative process, we will analyze our artistic choices and search for meaning in the materials used. Garment construction, human form, adhesion technique, and contextualization will all be discussed throughout this class to remind students that their process is not confined to certain steps and that they should listen to their intuition when producing a piece of art. Ari Serrano, Alexander McQueen, DJ Chappel, Telfar Clemens, and Elisha Brockenberry will be used as references throughout the semester. Final projects will be displayed at The Norwalk Art Space with a formal opening reception on December 15, 2022.

Visual Storytelling in Ink

with Resident Artist Tiara Trent

Fridays | 3:45pm - 5:45pm |

September 30th - December 9th (10 weeks)

Free and open to students 13-18 yrs old

| 12 spots | Registration required

Everyone has a story to tell, whether it’s from their own experience or a fictional one from their imagination. In this course, students will use inking techniques to bring the stories they have in their minds to life. By recreating an event from their own lives or creating a world from their imagination, students can express their individuality through the stories they tell visually. Instructor Tiara Trent will guide students in various mediums through lectures, demonstrations, visual presentations, and supervised application of course concepts including line, value, calligraphy, composition, perspective, concept development, and color theory. Throughout every class, students will have time to write in their journals to flesh out the concepts they want to portray visually. For students who don’t know what story they want to convey, there will be a list of writing prompts to use for inspiration. Once students determine  their narrative, they will create basic thumbnail sketches laying out their composition to prepare for the final project. During this prepping stage, students will also determine whether or not they’d like to use color in their final project (alcohol-based markers). Final projects will be displayed at The Norwalk Art Space with a formal opening reception on December 15, 2022.
