Devonport Library
Auckland, New Zealand
Athfield Architects designed the Devonport Library as a pavilion that sits in the park of Windsor Reserve. Rather than a traditional ‘sanctuary’ behind solid walls, the library is conceived as a ‘verandah’ that addresses the street, the park, and the sea with multiple entries and community spaces. Collaboration with M?ori was a priority in the design. Five tribal groups identify the Devonport area as their ancestral lands and tell their stories throughout the building. A pare (lintel), with tribal carvings from each group, hangs over the main entrance; the design of carpet tiles has been derived from locally relevant M?ori patterns; lights have been hung in the Pleiades constellation formation, known to M?ori as Matariki and symbolizing the M?ori new year, and the building has been ‘gifted’ a M?ori name – Te P?taka K?rero o Te Hau Kapua.
