The Brookfield Library Newsletter - March 2023

Schools and Libraries

March 1, 2023

From: The Brookfield Library

Letter from the Director

Dear Friends,

It's been said that "March comes in like a lion, and goes out like a lamb." With the mild weather we've been having, I'm not sure what to expect this month, but whatever it is, The Brookfield Library has a lot going on to keep you busy.

Speaking of lions brings to mind the famous Patience and Fortitude, who stand proudly outside the New York Public Library in Manhattan, one of the most iconic public libraries in the world. This month, we are excited to offer "The History of Public Libraries" with captivating storyteller, John Cilio, on March 14, on Zoom. John will take us on a journey of libraries' evolution, starting in the 1830s, up through modern day, when libraries became the powerhouse of information they are. The presentation will even offer information about the history of our own library, and its early start here in Brookfield.

On Saturday, March 4, we'll be celebrating Read Across America Day with a Community Helper storytime for ages 3 and up, from 10 am until noon. Join us in the Children's Area upstairs for stories read by some of Brookfield's favorite helpers: a veterinarian, a teacher, a firefighter and a police officer. Drop in anytime; no registration is required.

We're excited to announce that Mindfulness for All is back, on Zoom, with Prabha Makayee. Join Prabha on March 8 or March 29 and learn how to take charge and change your mood and emotions by mindfully restoring your thoughts from a negative to positive perspective.

Finally, you don't have to be Irish to take part in our St. Patrick's Day-themed programs! We're hosting St. Patrick's Day Card Making for adults on March 7, and a Shamrock Quilling Craft for kids on March 9. On March 11, the Ashurst Irish Dancers, under the direction of Riverdance and Lord of the Dance stars, Craig & Christina Ashurst will lead an energetic performance of traditional and contemporary Irish dances in the Community Room. Their performance will get you in the spirit for St. Patrick's Day and is open to all ages!

We look forward to seeing you soon.

With warm regards,
Debbie Brooks
Acting Director
