2023 RACE INFO

IMTUF100

START: Saturday September 16, 2023 at 6:00 AM MST.

CUTOFF:  36 hours.  Must finish by 6:00 PM MST on Sunday September 17 for an official finish.  If we must stagger the start and you start after 6 AM, this will be considered in your finish time.

LOCATION:  Start and Finish at Jug Mountain Ranch (JMR), just south of McCall, ID.  We will set up in the meadow north of the JMR clubhouse as we did in 2020-2022.

COURSE:  100 mile loop course in the Salmon River Mountains near McCall, ID.  Expect some very steep climbs and descents with TUF footing, beautiful summits and ridges, deep canyons with pristine rivers and lots of wildlife.  The peak elk rut is usually on during this weekend, so bugling bulls are frequently heard and seen.  Other wildlife include bear, wolves, lions, moose, deer, eagles, goshawks and more.  Click the course tab for more details, maps, etc.

DIFFICULTY:   Very difficult.  IMTUF is a Hardrock100 Qualifier for a good reason.  It is a little over 100 miles.  There is lots of steep climbing totaling over 20,000' feet of ascent.  The footing is rough overall and downright brutal at times.  Finishers have often compared it to Wasatch 100 in difficulty, but more technical.

STATS:  100+ mi, 22,000 gain.

Just expect a long and hard journey and you will enjoy the adventure.

Packet Pickup:  Friday, September 15, 2023 at Jug Mountain Ranch camping area from 3pm to 6pm.  We may skip the in-person briefing and do it by video and emails.

Drop Bags:  Drop them at the start, just before the race.  Read the race manual for details on the bags.  Make 'em small and 100% weatherproof!

Pre-Race Briefing: We will do it by video and emails.  Any questions you may have we can discuss on Friday at JMR.

2023 SUPERCOURSE MAP.  Note: the distance and vertical gain shown in this Garmin file are less than what you will experience on the race course.  This file is mapped at just about 3 miles shorter than the SUPERCOURSE version in 2020's race.  All changes are near the start and finish of the race on JMR lands.  Count on a little over 100 miles and a little over 22,000 gain.

JUGHANDLE 20 MILER.  This race starts on Sunday, September 17th, 2023 at 9AM.

A tough and beautiful 20 mile mountain race. Jughandle Mountain is the towering peak southeast of McCall.  Supposedly, it's granite top looks like a jug of whiskey laid over on its side.  It is defended by steep and unrelenting cross country slopes and a crown of granite talus fields.

Date:        SUNDAY, September 17, 2023.

Time:         9:00 AM Mountain Time.

Location:   Jug Mountain Ranch, McCall, ID in the huge meadow a half mile north of the Clubhouse.

Register:    Opens January 2 on Ultrasignup.com on the IMTUF100 page.  $75.

Course: 20 miles with about 5,000' vertical gain.  5,000' vertical loss.  Loop course with a short (0.5mi) out and back to the aid station at Boulder Lake Trailhead. The course is different than the McCall Trailrunning Classic 20 miler.  It goes up and over Jughandle Mountain and down the talus slope to Louie Lake (same first 12 miles as the 100 miler).  Then leave the 100mi course on a shortcut from Louie Lake and half mile out and back to Boulder Lake Aid Station.  Then the same final 7+ miles as the 100 miler back through Idaho State Lands and finish at Jug Mountain Ranch.

Cutoff:  6:00 PM- same as for the IMTUF100 Mile.  9 hours is plenty of time for ANYONE to go 20 miles.

Self Sufficiency: We will have one well manned aid station at Boulder Lake and one unmanned water stop earlier in the race in Jug Meadows (approx mile 7).  You should pack as if you were on a long training run- plenty of water, food and extra clothing and essentials.  It is wild and lonely up there.
