This zine is made possible by the Wichita Journalism Collaborative, a coalition of eleven media outlets or community partners that has been focused on improving the quality of journalism in our community on the topic of mental health over the past few years.

Susan Copich: Staged Stories
May 4-July 15
Polk/Wilson Gallery

Ohio-raised and New York-based photographer Susan Copich has since 2010 been making highly staged and carefully crafted self-portraits that reflect on the dark sides of contemporary American femininity, domesticity, motherhood, and the artist’s inner psychological dramas in ways that that are both alarming and amusing, over-the-top and relatable. This exhibition brings together the series Domestic Bliss and then he forgot my name alongside a short film titled The Cupcake.

As Copich herself says about these works, “I dwell in the dark thoughts and recesses of my mind to create character and subject and navigate both my own personal imperatives as woman, artist, mother, and wife, as well as those—personal, social, and cultural—that are imposed by others. My work is my commentary on how a family can live a public life that is far from their private life, even within the family; how secrets are kept, coddled and nurtured.”

The exhibition opens Thursday, May 4 and runs through July 15. Join us from 5-8 p.m., Thursday, May 25 for the Summer Exhibition Opening Celebration, where you'll be able to explore this exceptional display of Copich's work, as well as In Event of Moon Disaster in the Beren and Amsden Galleries, and Artists at Work: the Ulrich Staff Creates in the Grafly Gallery.

Micala Gingrich Gaylord: Love Is Memory
Through May 20
Grafly Gallery

As a contribution to Wichita’s city-wide events for The Big Read, a program of the National Endowment for the Arts designed to revitalize the role of reading in American culture, the Ulrich Museum is pleased to present Wichita artist Micala Gingrich Gaylord’s project Love Is Memory. Engaging with local elders, Micala gathered personal items connected with their memories of love and activated them in the gallery using audio recordings, creating a moving chorus of individual stories.

Have you shared your Ulrich memories with us yet?

Our 50th anniversary is right around the corner (in 2024) and we're planning lots of great exhibitions and events to celebrate the Museum's excellence. One thing we are working on is collecting memories from folks who have been connected to the Ulrich over the years. Whether you are a present or past employee, a donor, volunteer, student, or general visitor, we'd love to hear your favorite memories of the Ulrich. We've created this webpage, which has a form on it, to help you share your stories. The memories we collect will be shared throughout our 50th anniversary celebrations and might even end up in a book we're putting together. We'd love to hear your stories.
