From: Sidney Poitier Film FestivalJoin us for a free community film festival celebrating the work and legacy of actor Sidney Poitier, with five films and important community conversations offered Oct. 14 - Nov. 4.
Often called the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. of movies, Poitier was the first Black actor to win the Academy Award for Best Actor. He was the first Black actor to star in major films in non-stereotypical roles. His movies brought topics such as interracial couples and discrimination to American households.
Join us for the entire festival or take your pick of five films at two locations, Friendship Village Tempe at 2645 E. Southern Ave. and the Tempe Public Library at 3500 S. Rural Road. Hear about current events that occurred while each of these movies debuted and join in a post-movie discussion group.
Please RSVP for each film at [email protected].
The festival is produced by ASU Sidney Poitier New American Film School, City of Tempe, City of Tempe Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Office, Friendship Village Tempe Diversity Team, Tempe History Museum African American Advisory Committee and Tempe Public Library
