4.97-acre, city-owned parking lot to be redeveloped into apartments, retail, and office space

Senate Majority Leader Bob Duff (D-Norwalk) applauded on Dec 12th's announcement from Governor Ned Lamont of $2 million in state funding to Norwalk to help with the remediation and ultimate redevelopment of a city-owned parking lot.

The 4.97-acre parcel of land is located at 55 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Norwalk. Redevelopment plans by Quarterra (formerly LMC), include approximately 472 affordable mixed-income apartment units, 57,786 square feet of retail space, and 25,000 square feet of office space. In addition, plans include a pedestrian-only alley lined with restaurants, cafes, and shops.

"I am incredibly excited about this new round of state funding for Norwalk," said Senator Duff. "Turning a parking lot into a new development will mean more jobs, more places for young professionals to live, and more revenue for the city. Thanks to Governor Lamont for choosing this location in Norwalk and helping us move forward with this project."

The funding is from the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development’s Brownfield Remediation and Development Program. The Norwalk announcement was in concert with similar announcements in 15 other towns and cities regarding 40 other projects expected to leverage approximately $625 million in private funding to help the clean-up of approximately 86 acres of land.

In a release announcing all of the 41 projects, Governor Lamont stated, "Cleaning up blighted properties that have been vacant for decades and putting them into productive use will ultimately generate private investment equal to many times these state grants. If we remediate these properties now, we can turn an eyesore into an asset, revitalize neighborhoods, and transform otherwise unusable property into new space for businesses and residents."
