Government and Politics

July 27, 2022

From: Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin

Petersburg, VA -- On July 12, 2022, Governor Glen Youngkin announced his “Additional Key Administration Appointments” in a formal press release

Included in the Governor’s appointments was the appointment of Anthony C. Williams, City Attorney for the City of Petersburg, Virginia to the Criminal Justice Services Board (“CJSB”).  The CJSB is the policy board for the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS).  It has 32 members who represent all aspects of the criminal justice system, both state and local, as well as the private security industry, the public-at-large and the General Assembly.  The Board is the approving authority for regulations DCJS promulgates pursuant to the Code of Virginia and the Administrative Process Act and it approves most of the grants DCJS awards to localities, state agencies and private non-profit organizations. The Board also provides guidance and feedback to DCJS in fulfilling its wide ranging responsibilities.

Williams is the current City Attorney for the City of Petersburg.  He previously served as law enforcement officer for the City of Hampton, Virginia and was City Attorney for the City of Winchester, Virginia for over twelve years prior to coming to Petersburg.  “It was my sincerest honor to accept this appointment by the Honorable Governor Glen Youngkin to the Virginia Criminal Justice Services Board.  In my years of service to the Commonwealth and Virginia localities, I have and continue to work closely with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.  I hope that I will be able to use my experience and service on this board to improve the Criminal Justice System here in the Commonwealth for the benefit of all of our citizens including those I serve in Petersburg.

The appointment of Williams by Governor Youngkin marks the second appointment of a top Petersburg City Official this year.  On May 9, 2022, the Governor announced his appointment of Interim Petersburg City Manager Kenneth Miller to the Commission to Combat Antisemitism. The Commission will make recommendations to the Governor and General Assembly with the goal of identifying ways to reverse increasing antisemitic incidents in the Commonwealth.

“The City of Petersburg has and continues to work extensively with Governor Youngkin and our state representatives to improve the quality of life for our citizens.  These appointments are a testament to those ongoing efforts” says Petersburg Mayor Sam Parham.
