Straight from the stage of NPR’s wonderfully funny weekly quiz show “Wait, Wait...Don’t Tell Me,” Roy Blount, Jr. will entertain and regale the Salisbury Forum audience with his unique style of American storytelling. Roy has been compared to Mark Twain and James Thurber. Time Magazine placed Roy “in the tradition of the great curmudgeons like H. L. Mencken and W. C. Fields.” He is the author of 24 books on humor, history, food, football, the South, the Marx Brothers, Robert E. Lee, and men and women. His essays, articles, and poems have appeared in over 170 publications, including The Atlantic, The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, and Gourmet.

MASKS: All persons are required to wear a face mask in the lobby and in the auditorium of the hosting facility throughout a speaker event.

Confused by Crypto? Hotchkiss Teacher Jason Maier Can Help!

Noble Horizons

Are you baffled by crypto, bitcoin, digital currencies, etc.? Let the chair of The Hotchkiss School’s Mathematics and Computer Science Departments, Jason Maier, help! On October 29 at 2 pm Noble Horizons and the Scoville LIbrary will host a program in which Maier will teach the basics of Bitcoin in a way that will allow you to explain it to someone else. Often described as “digital gold,” Bitcoin, a powerful monetary network that is transforming society’s understanding of money, provides a way to transmit value across the world instantly with practically zero cost.  There will be time for Q&A.

Maier will also discuss this maturing technology’s potential impact on social justice and equality as well as the security risks of an unregulated currency whose use is anonymous and irreversible. He is the author of the upcoming book A Progressive’s Case for Bitcoin to be released in 2023.

Salisbury resident Peter B. Kaufman, author of The New Enlightenment and the Fight to Free Knowledge and Senior Program Officer, MIT Open Learning, will introduce the book and open a discussion.

Bridge with John Dippel at SML

Classes meet on Wednesdays, 2:00 - 4:00 pm

Local resident John Dippel is offering a course on “Bridge Basics," held in the main circulation room of SML. The course will cover evaluating your cards, bidding fundamentals, and playing the hand. It will run through the fall. If you want to join, send an email to [email protected]. Please include your phone and email address, as well as the level of bridge you’re interested in. Couples and singles are both welcome. Dippel, a historian, and author returned to playing bridge when he moved to Salisbury ten years ago and took a similar course. He has been playing regularly in town ever since.

The Scoville Memorial Library is pleased to offer Passes to institutions including the Mark Twain House, Hartford, the White Memorial Conservation Center, Litchfield, and many others.
