Fun Feathered Facts: Things You Might Not Know About the Birds in Your Neighborhood

Saturday, May 20th, 11am

All ages

Did you ever wonder why some owls have "ears" and some don't? Have you ever heard of a duck that lives in a tree? Emma Jean Sisk, a seventh grader at Salisbury Central School and an avid birder, will share her enthusiasm and love for birds with us and answer these questions and many more. She will help us build our nest of knowledge about these fascinating feathered creatures. We will learn how to open not only our eyes, but also our ears to discover more about the birds we see in our own yard or nearby forest, meadow, lake or pond. Weather permitting, the talk will include a short birding walk along the rail trail, some fun bird trivia, and a bird-inspired snack! Bring binoculars along if you have them!

SML Middle Grade Book Club

Saturday, May 20th

2 to 3:30PM, Ages 11-14

We've created a book club for middle grade students to explore literary genres. We meet monthly to talk about the stylistic differences between the "classics," historical fiction, non-fiction and graphic novels on our reading list. Our knowledge is deepened through discussion, movies, games, and other activities designed to enrich the experience. Titles will be available for check out from the library three weeks in advance of our meeting date. We're currently reading Discovering Wes Moore, the young adult adaption. Register today!

Reading Buddies

Designed to help younger children practice their reading, Reading Buddies is a program that pairs emerging readers with another, older "kid." The idea and hope is that connecting with another, older "kid," is a treat in itself, and that reading aloud to a "kid" is low-pressure. At the same time, the student volunteer (age 12-18) serves as a reading mentor, demonstrating how to stay calm while reading and how to conquer reading difficulties. The buddy will ask questions about the text and have a basic understanding of assessing and helping with reading comprehension. This is an in-person or virtual program to fit your needs. For more information and to register click here.

Let's Weave Together
Weaving is an ancient practice that is often used as a metaphor for storytelling. Join us in a community weaving project at the library. Sit for a few moments at our loom and weave in your story!
