Extra Fab Take Your Child to the Library Day!

Saturday, February 4th, 10am-4pm. All ages welcome.

This year, Take Your Child to the Library Day coincides with one of Salisbury’s biggest events of the year, The Salisbury Winter Sports Association Jumpfest! We have a special exhibit of Roy Sherwood (Salisbury’s own Olympic jumper) memorabilia, fun activities for kids to shake out the chills and s’mores fixins to be enjoyed around the outdoor fire pits!

Housatonic Valley Regional High School's artgarage is also on hand inviting us to join in their campaign to make art not war. The "Ukraine Art Envelope Project" is raising money to help the cause. Stop in, create a one-of-a-kind work of art on provided envelopes, submit it, and attend HOUSY'S artgarage exhibition on Friday, February 17th from 4 to 7pm. Everything you'll need for creating the pieces will be provided here at the library, and all the proceeds from the exhibition/sale at the school will go to three charities supporting the Ukraine.

Be sure to stop by the library on your way to or in between jumps for a little bit of heart and soul!

Bookbinding for Families with Lilly Rand Barnett

Saturday, February 11th from 2:00-3:15pm, Ages 7+

In this afternoon class for young artists age 7 and up, Barnett will teach kids a way to make a "no-binding-necessary" book. You'll be invited to turn your bound paper piece into a form of your choice, a journal, a decorated volume, or a Valentine's Day card that keeps spreading love on every page! Feel free to bring special papers or other materials that you'd like to work with or choose from Barnett's own assortment.

Limited to 15 children (along with a parent or guardian focused on the binding project at hand). Registration required.

Reading Buddies

Designed to help younger children practice reading, Reading Buddies is a program that pairs emerging readers with another, older "kid." The idea and hope is that connecting with another, older "kid," is a treat in itself, and that reading aloud to a "kid" is low-pressure. At the same time, the student volunteer (age 12-18) serves as a reading mentor, demonstrating how to stay calm while reading and how to conquer reading difficulties. The buddy will ask questions about the text and have a basic understanding of assessing and helping with reading comprehension. For more information and to register click here.

Virtual Tutoring

School age students

Could you benefit from extra help with certain subjects at school? SML in collaboration with The Hotchkiss School is offering a tutoring program that pairs older and younger students according to their strengths and needs. Tutoring sessions will be facilitated via Zoom. Register here.
