This summer, I did something I never thought I would do, something I never really wanted to do. I went skydiving. One of my best friends wanted to go for his birthday, and before I knew it, I was 10,000 feet in the air, thinking, “I really hope the parachute opens.” Once I jumped out of the plane (let's face it, I was gently pushed) and the parachute did open, I breathed a sigh of relief and took in the beauty of Cape Cod and the Islands below me. It wasn’t until we were about to land that my nerves set in again, at which point, my instructor said, “No worries, I’ve got this.” At that point, I realized that I took a literal leap of faith by trusting in someone else.

The opening of a new school year is a lot like skydiving. Some of the pre-schoolers do not want to leave their parents, and until their parachute opens, with the support of their teachers, they are pretty sure they would rather be at home. After a summer of sleeping in and no homework, our returning students sometimes need a gentle push from their parents and guardians to see the beauty that a new school year offers. As our eighth grade students begin to navigate the high school application process, they breathe a sigh of relief when their teachers and counselors say, “Don’t worry, we’ve got this.”

As we start the school year, I know that together “we’ve got this.” Working with parents, guardians, alumni, and the community, we will provide our students with an environment where they can take a leap of faith, trusting in those around them.
