A Note from Saint Columbkille

Dear Saint Columbkille families and friends,

At most Catholic schools, the staff wear many hats. All of us have our primary job (i.e., teacher, administrator, support staff, etc.), but often we are asked to help out in an area outside of our job description and in some cases outside of our area of expertise. I had this experience last week when I was asked to cover lunch duty.

I was so grateful that Ms. Janowski was there as the primary lunch monitor and I was able to follow her lead. The students seemed to know just what to do, so it gave me time to watch and experience what lunchtime in the cafeteria means to a middle school student. After all, they missed two years of it and in some ways it is still novel.

I saw students talking, smiling and laughing; students telling jokes, telling stories and in some cases, talking academics. Students were attempting a three-point layup to get their trash in the trash can, which was quickly stopped by another student reminding everyone of the rules. I saw students happily opening lunchboxes, as well as thankfully purchasing hot lunch from Jason and Melissa. In short, what I saw is what we missed over these last few years: middle school students, being just that, middle school students. They were enjoying a break while eating in the cafeteria, which offers an opportunity to learn critical social skills that will carry them into adulthood.

I left the cafeteria feeling grateful; grateful that our students are back in one place to eat and talk, grateful that we have such a nice, bright space in which they can eat, and grateful that I was asked to help out. This experience gave me a little more insight into the joy that little things can bring, like eating with friends.

As we move through the second month of the new year, I hope 2023 brings you, as parents and guardians, joy in finding the little things your children do so well. They are special
