RODNEY SMITH: A LEAP OF FAITH

On View at The Photography Show - Presented by AIPAD

March 31st - April 2nd, 2023, CENTER 415, New York City
Robert Klein Gallery - Booth 106

ELEGANT, CHARMING, AND STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL, RODNEY SMITH’S FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY IS A DELIGHTFUL REVELATION.

Join us in celebrating the publication of Rodney Smith A LEAP OF FAITH, by the J. Paul Getty Museum. Robert Klein Gallery is proud to present a one person exhibition of photographs and first look at this critical examination of Rodney Smith's extraordinary career during AIPAD, on view this Thursday through Sunday April.

Mystery and manners, romance and fun—the sophisticated compositions and stylish characters in the extraordinary pictures of fashion photographer Rodney Smith (1947–2016) exist in a timeless world of his imagination. Born in New York City, Smith started out as a photo-essayist, turned to portrait photography, and found his niche, and greatest success, in fashion photography. Inspired by W. Eugene Smith, taught by Walker Evans, and devoted to the techniques of Ansel Adams, Smith was driven by the dual ideals of technical mastery and pure beauty.

Inviting comparison to the surrealist, Rene Magritte, Smith’s’ fashion photography has long been hailed as a delightful revelation. Meticulously-crafted, humorous, paradoxical, romanticized, and fun, Smith created scenes of enchantment, and surprising, dream-like worlds without retouching, setting him apart from his contemporaries and beyond. Getty Museum curator Paul Martineau describes Smith, “...like Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, his photographs lead us down the rabbit hole to a fantastical place that is just beyond our reach but one intended to inspire us to be better versions of ourselves.”.(Paul Martineau, curator of photographs, J, Paul Getty Museum).

Critical essays by Rebecca Senft, chief curator of the Center for Creative photography, Graydon Carter, Editor of Vanity Fair magazine, Leslie Smolan, executor of the estate of Rodney Smith and Paul Martineau, curator of photographs, J. Paul Getty Museum accompany more than two hundred reproductions of Smith's images. Robert Klein Gallery has represented Rodney Smith since 1999.

They have transformed us. They have veiled us. Sometimes we hide behind them. Sometimes we get lost before them. Sometimes we scavenge them in search of lost loves. Through them, we sometimes escape the Real World. With one click, we sometimes get deleted. "They" are tiny icons on our computer. - Shadi Ghadirian
