The bookdrop is open 24/7, is emptied frequently. The library is now fine free.

Preschool Storytime
Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m.
October 4, 11, 18, 25, November 1, 15

(no program November 8 as there is no school)
Join us in our Wagner Room for stories, songs, and rhymes that encourage literacy and social skills and help get your preschooler prepared for kindergarten. We will offer a craft related to the weekly theme at the end of the program that can be done at the
library or brought home.

Storytime for Toddlers and Tots:
Mother Goose on the Loose
Wednesdays at 10:15 a.m. or 11:15 a.m.
October 5, 12, 19, 26, November 2, 9, 16

Mother Goose on the Loose, a fun-filled interactive session for our youngest patrons, uses rhymes, a
story, songs, puppets, scarves, and more to stimulate the learning process of babies and toddlers. Two
sessions will be offered each Wednesday to keep group sizes small and interactions personalized.

AMERICA’S BEST IDEA; THE US
NATIONAL PARKS AND THEIR
TRANSLATION AROUND THE WORLD

This presentation will highlight Dr. Richard Benfield’s ten years teaching about National Parks and World Heritage Sites and his travels all over the USA to see the 59 parks of the US National Park system. He has also visited over 115 countries to assess their National Parks system. This will illustrate the nature of National Parks in East Africa, the Himalayas, Southeast Asia and South America as well.

After attending this educational workshop, you will have a better understanding of how Social Security works, the claiming strategies still available and how you can maximize your Social Security

Medicare Informational Presentation

Ben Coleman, a local resident & Medicare Information specialist working with seniors in the Middlesex County area, presents a valuable program on Medicare health plan options. He covers how to find coverage that best meets your health and financial needs and answers questions about your coverage options. Each attendee will receive a Medicare guide. If you are over 65, approaching 65, or under 65 with certain disabilities this program is for you!

Pumpkin Painting for the Portland Fair
Wednesday, October 5 at 6:30 p.m.

Paint a pumpkin and we will bring it to the Portland Fair and enter it for you! Kids of all ages are invited to participate, but only those age 5 and up are eligible for fair entries. Pumpkins and paint will be supplied. A parent or guardian must be with children to help with supervision. Registration is required and space is limited.

The Ologies is a book series that delves into following lost journals and investigating unusual topics.
Each week we will explore one of the Ologies in depth, from investigating Illusionology’s properties of magic to everything dragons and Wizardology. We will try out our spy skills with Spyology and walk the plank while solving a Pirateology mystery. Get ready to become an expert investigator and the ultimate “Ologist.” Registration is required and space is limited.

Pokemon Party
Grades K-2

You don’t need to be a Pokemon master to enjoy this program that features games, crafts and more based on these popular Japanese characters. We’ll hatch our own Pokemon eggs, go on a scavenger hunt, and create our own Pokemon characters and trading cards in this four-week program for kids in grades K-2. Registration is required and space is limited.

Superhero Training Academy
Tuesday, November 8 at 10:30 a.m.
 
November 8 may be a day off from school, but kids in grades pre-K through grade 2 are invited to a different kind of training: our Superhero Academy! Join us to master superhero skills ranging from leaping over buildings to practicing their x-ray vision to decontaminating a kryptonite zone!

Looking for something to do? Book a pass at the Portland Library for one of over 20 museums and zoos.  Patrons (18 and over) may check out the passes;  the passes allow for a set number of people to attend the museum for a reduced rate or free admission. 

The Museum Pass Program is provided by the Friends of Portland Library.  Thank you, Friends!

October Teen Events

Monday, October 3 at 3:30 p.m.: Teen Advisory Group Meeting
Come share your thoughts with us on what you would like to see the library offer in terms of programs, materials and more whileenjoying some snacks and laughs with friends. You will earn community service hours for each meeting you attend. Registration is required.

Monday, October 17 at 3:30 p.m.: #KusamaPumpkins
Yayoi Kusama is a Japanese artist famous for her polka-dot –adorned pumpkin and flower art. We will use #KusamaPumpkins and the work of other famous artists to create our own pumpkin masterpieces. Registration is required for this program so we know how many pumpkins and snacks to purchase.

Friday, October 28 from 4:00-7:00 p.m.:
Halloween on Main Street

Put on your costumes and come down to Main Street and other area businesses for a not-to-be-missed evening of socializing and collecting treats. 

Saturday, October 29 from 12:00-2:00 p.m. at Riverfront Park:
Monster March

Come down to Portland’s Riverfront Park for an afternoon of Halloween fun sponsored by Portland Youth and Family Services. A costume parade for kids and pets starts at 12:30 p.m. There will also be
pumpkin decorating, a craft for kids, spooky stories, and refreshments.
