Exhibition Connection

Displayed in  our current The Lure of the Garden exhibition, you'll find a photo from "Antiquities of Mexico: comprising fac-similes of ancient Mexican paintings and hieroglyphics, preserved in the Royal Libraries of Paris, Berlin, and Dresden; in the Imperial Library of Vienna, v.2." This image comes from one of just a few pre-Columbian manuscripts to have survived the Spanish conquest of present-day Mexico. It was created in the country's southern Mixteca region, which had an exceptional history of writing and manuscript illumination. This was also the region where corn was first domesticated some 9,000 years ago, profoundly affecting the local society and, over time, the entire world.

"Antiquities of Mexico: comprising fac-similes of ancient Mexican paintings and hieroglyphics, preserved in the Royal Libraries of Paris, Berlin, and Dresden; in the Imperial Library of Vienna, v.2." by Edward King, Viscount Kingsborough (London: A. Aglio, 1830)
