Nalini Malani awarded 2023 Kyoto Prize
Galerie Lelong & Co. is pleased to announce that Nalini Malani has been awarded the 2023 Kyoto Prize, Japan’s highest private award.

Regarded by many as Japan’s version of the Nobel Prize, the Kyoto Prize has been awarded since 1984 to recognize significant contributions to the progress of science, the advancement of civilization, and the enrichment of the human spirit.

The Prize is presented annually in three categories: Advanced Technology, Basic Sciences, and Arts and Philosophy, endowed with 100 million yen per category.

Among the laureates selected earlier in the field of Arts and Philosophy are: Olivier Messiaen, John Cage, Karl Popper, Akira Kurosawa, Nam June Paik, Tadao Ando, Jürgen Habermas, Issey Miyake, Pina Bausch, and Joan Jonas.

The Prize notes that in order to make the invisible visible, Malani pioneered artistic expression that proclaims the voices of the voiceless who are buried in society. She is active globally as a non-Western artist, contributing significantly to current trends reconsidering Western-centrism in art. Malani creates phantasmagorical spaces with approachable art forms using various media in layering such as videos, paintings, drawings, and installations.
