Madrigal Chorale Brings Choral and Visual Arts Together for its Annual Pops Concert

Arts and Entertainment

February 23, 2024

Detroit, MI -- Madrigal Chorale explores the intersection of choral and visual arts with its annual Pops Concert. Filled with popular hits from Broadway, radio chart-toppers, and American classics, the concert takes place at the Ellen Kayrod Gallery.

The event doesn’t follow the format of a traditional concert performance. Performances will take place throughout the gallery, allowing attendees to take in the art pieces around the space while enjoying full ensemble, small group, and solo performances throughout the night.

Music at the concert will be a series of contemporary favorites, drawing inspiration from the theme “Take Me to the Water,” including Billy Joel’s “River of Dreams,” Kirby Shaw’s arrangement of “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and “Muddy Water” from the musical “Big River.”

Guests will be able to enjoy hors d’oeuvres, desserts, and a complimentary alcoholic beverage during the event. Proceeds from the concert will help support Madrigal Chorale’s mission of community service.

This will be Madrigal Chorale’s first performance at the Kayrod Gallery, located in the Hannan Center. This new collaboration was assisted by Betsy Marsh, Madrigal Chorale Associate Director. Marsh’s work as a visual artist fostered her relationship with Richard Reeves, Jr., who serves as the director of arts and culture at the Hannan Center.

“This concert is a testament to the power of community collaboration,” said Dr. Brandon Ulrich, Madrigal Chorale’s Artistic Director. “Drawing on the talents of our own artistic leadership, this event has allowed us to expand farther into our community and couple two artistic mediums together for a remarkable sensory experience.”

The concert will be led by Ulrich, who has created an extraordinary impact on the community through his work with Madrigal Chorale and Stoney Creek High School. Ulrich has worked with the school since its inception and currently serves as director of choral and orchestral activities.
