Good Morning from The Depot!

Chamber staff members, Jonathan Levine and Melissa Vander Plas, promoted Lanesboro at the Fillmore County Fair on Friday, July 21, along with board members Joe Goetzke and Alison Leathers.

Wow, it’s already August and we continue to welcome all types of visitors to Lanesboro! We have greeted a lot of families over the past few weeks and several school groups. We try to create a special experience for the kids, especially those on an educational trip.

Many enjoy the local “Medallion Hunt” that takes them on a walking tour around town searching for metal discs. We also recommend a stop at the Lanesboro History Museum to listen to stories in the phone booth and a stop at the river to cool off as well as watch the water cascading over the dam. With the younger children, we always suggest a stop at Sylvan Park where they can play on the equipment and enjoy the simple pleasures of a great jungle gym.

Recently, a school daycare group from Rochester enjoyed all of those things, plus a visit to the DNR Fish Hatchery and a stop into the visitor center to grab a Lanesboro bike trail pin. They ended their visit to our community with a special ice cream treat. Once they returned to Rochester, the daycare teacher emailed me and thanked me for helping her plan the trip to Lanesboro. She said the kids had an amazing time enjoying the “simple things.”

That resonated with me as I had recently heard something similar during the meeting where the University of Minnesota Extension shared the results of our winter tourism assessment. The facilitator mentioned promoting the simple joys of playing in the snow - building snowmen, sledding, snowball fights, etc. The joys of winter do not have to be complicated.

As we begin the transition to fall throughout August, there are still many “simple” things to enjoy in Lanesboro - a picnic in the park, listening to live music at the High Court Pub or Sylvan Brewing, a bike ride or a walk on the Root River Trail, or even strolling down Parkway enjoying an ice cream cone. I have discovered the “magic of Lanesboro” exists in the simple experiences, made special by the friendly business owners, the welcoming community and the beauty of our surroundings.

I hope you take time to enjoy some of these wonderful opportunities in Lanesboro as we make our way through the last month of summer.

Wishing you a day filled with simplicity and serenity.
Melissa
