Kansas Commission on Disability Concerns Legislative Session Update - February 2, 2023

Government and Politics

February 3, 2023

From: Kansas Governor Laura Kelly

The Disability Hiring Preference bill (HB2253) and the Supported Decision-Making bill (HB 2250) were introduced this week. We extend our thanks to Mike Burgess with the Disability Rights Center for his work to get these bills introduced. No hearings have been scheduled.  l have attached them below for your information.

The Disability Hiring Preference bill is supported by the Kansas Commission on Disability Concerns (KCDC) and many other disability organizations. It would establish a hiring preference for job applicants with disabilities applying for jobs with the State of Kansas to voluntarily access the program so they are guaranteed an interview for the positions they apply for.  If you have questions, please feel free to contact me at [email protected]

The Supported Decision-Making bill would create the Supported Decision-Making Agreements Act which allows adults who do not have the ability to understand the nature and consequences of a decision to have another trusted adult help them understand and make a decision.  The bill has detailed information on the entire process and definitions for all of the terms used.  If you have questions, please contact Sara Weir, Executive Director of the Kansas Council on Developmental Disabilities (KCDD) at [email protected]

Please let me know if you have questions, corrections or bills you would like me add.
