Dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our community, Johnson County Park and Recreation District offers year-round program, activities, and special events for all ages!

To register by phone, call 913-831-3359. For all in-person programs, physical distancing and COVID-19 safe practices will be encouraged.

A reminder that while JCPRD’s 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the 50 Plus Department at 913-826-2975 for space availability.

Here's a sampling of programs JCPRD has coming up for the week of Jan. 22-28:

Jan. 23 - Art: Homeschool Making & Engineering I (Ages 8-12)

Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, Tuesdays, 10 a.m. to Noon, 11 sessions, $192.50 per person, $212 nonresidents

Make machines, electrical circuits, custom games, and more as you learn how to combine art with engineering to explore and create amazing things during this series. Students will go through the entire design process from idea to sketch, to first draft and end result; focusing on iterative design and process over product. This class is designed to supplement your homeschool curriculum and let you explore art, making, science, and engineering in a hands-on way. Activity number 23925.

Jan. 24 -  Cards: Bridge Workshops - Scoring  (Ages 50 & Older)

Matt Ross Community Center, 8101 Marty St., Overland Park, 4 to 6 p.m., $12 per person, $13 nonresidents

Jan. 24 - Bingo: Hello, Dolly! (Ages 50 & Older)

Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, 9101 Nall Ave, Prairie Village, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., $5 per person, $6 nonresidents

BINGO! Delight in food, prizes, fun, and 12 games of bingo. Variety of prizes awarded including gift certificates. Space is limited, register early by calling 913-831-3359. Jan. 24 - Performing Group Music: New Horizons Band (Ages 50 & Older)

New location during Roeland Park Community Center Remodel! Roeland Park City Hall, 4600 W. 51st St., Roeland Park, Tuesdays, 6 to 8 p.m., 13 sessions, $95 per person, $105 nonresidents

Dig out your old instrument or purchase/rent a new one and join our group of fun-loving musicians. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t played in years! Through a cooperative effort between UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance, Meyer Music, and JCPRD, this band offers an opportunity to make music in a relaxed, learning atmosphere. Jan. 25 - Lunch & Learn: Taste of Ireland (Ages 50 & Older)

Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, noon to 1:30 p.m., $29 per person, $31 nonresidents

Join us for an afternoon of Irish culture, food, and dance. Hear about Ireland's rich history and culture from the Kansas City Irish Center. After, delight in live dancers from the Driscoll School of Dance. Watch the talented young dancers as they perform cultural steps and enjoy a catered Irish meal. If you'll be traveling to Ireland with the 50 Plus Travel program’s offering of an eight-day extended trip to Ireland in March called “Irish Splendor,” you won't want to miss this prelude of a presentation! Activity number 24766.

Jan. 25 - Pickleball: Pickleball Workshops - Serve/Return (Ages 50 & Older)

Matt Ross Community Center, 8101 Marty St., Overland Park, 10:30 a.m. to Noon, $15 per person, $16 nonresidents

Designed for beginner and intermediate players who want to take their pickleball game to the next level. Basic knowledge and understanding of pickleball required. Equipment provided, space is limited. Activity number 24408.

Jan. 26 - Little Critter’s Day Out: Starry Sky (Ages 3-5)

Ernie Miller Nature Center, 909 N. Kansas 7 Highway, Olathe, 9 a.m. to Noon, $20 per person, $22 nonresidents

Your Little Critter will enjoy three hours of fun and education once as you enjoy some personal time! Activities will vary but we will have an adventure, eat a snack, make a craft, play games, and see an animal visitor each day. Dress for the weather. Jan. 26 - Adult Hip Hop (Ages 16 & Older)

Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, 5:30-6:30 p.m., 6 sessions, $75 per person, $84 nonresidents

Join us in this beginner friendly class. Come bust a move and learn the fundamentals of hip hop dance. Activity number 24115.

Jan. 26 - Belly Dancing (Ages 16 & Older)

Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, Thursdays, 7 to 8 p.m., 6 sessions, $75 per person, $84 nonresidents

Join us for this low-impact, body-positivity-style dance class! Learn the fundamentals of this Eastern style of dance all while getting low to moderate exercise in. Activity number 24116.

Jan. 26 - Cards: Beginning Bridge (Ages 50 & Older)

Get in on the biggest game in town! Learn the basics of bidding, scoring, and the play of the hand. Price includes Audrey Grant’s “Bidding in the 21st Century.” Activity number 24424.

Jan. 26 - Homeschool Theatre (Ages 8-10)

Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, Thursdays, 10 a.m. to Noon, 6 sessions, $140 per person, $155 nonresidents

In this course series participants will learn the fundamentals of improv, puppetry, and playwriting. The last class will culminate in a sharing for friends and familiesActivity number 24114.

Jan. 27 - Gardening: Desert Planters (Ages 50 & Older)

Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, Shelter #1, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., $40 per person, $44 nonresidents 

Get creative and hands on while designing a planter to spruce up your porch or deck. Pot, soil, and flowers included. Activity number 24292.

Jan. 27 deadline - tournament is Feb. 10 - Winter Rally Pickleball Tournament (Ages 50 & Older)

Blue Valley Recreation Center at Hilltop, 7720 W. 143rd St., Overland Park, 8 a.m., $30 per person

Jan. 27 - Special Interest: Travels with Grandad - St. Louis (Ages 50 & Older)

Virtual Program, 10 to 11 a.m., FREE 

NEW! + 3rd of 5! Join presenter Hal Costly, for a series of virtual events as he shares his explorations of destinations he's experienced with his grandsons. Jan. 28 - Nature and Outdoors: Winter Nature Walk (All Ages)

Ernie Miller Nature Center, 909 N. Kansas 7 Highway, Olathe, 9:30 to 11 a.m., $9 per person, $10 nonresidents

Bundle up for the weather and join a naturalist to see the winter happenings on the trail. Waterproof shoes are recommended for snow or mud. If there is inclement weather, an alternate program will be held indoors. Activity number 24657. For more information call 913-826-2800.
