Artists and Designers Reimagine Definitions of Home and Domestic Space in Two Exhibitions Opening at ICA this Fall

Jes Fan, Nikita Gale, Hannah Levy, Ken Lum, and Oren Pinhassi Probe Boundaries of Designed Objects and the Human Body in Moveables

David Antonio Cruz Returns to his Hometown for First Survey Exhibition of his Portraiture, Spotlighting Chosen Families in the Queer Community

Philadelphia, PA - The fall 2023 season at the Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania (ICA) features two exhibitions exploring concepts of home and domestic space through different lenses and media. The group exhibition Moveables investigates the ways in which the designed environment has the capacity to condition experience, and how artworks can propose new models of “functionality.” On view concurrently, David Antonio Cruz’s portraiture of friends and family will be the focus of his first-ever solo exhibition—and the first in his hometown. Reflecting a broad diversity of contemporary artistic investigation, Moveables and David Antonio Cruz: When the Children Come Home open at ICA on August 18, 2023, with an opening reception on September 8. Both exhibitions will remain on view through December 17, 2023.

"ICA's fall program brings to the fore a discussion on contemporary space-making across media, providing a platform for both local and global contemporary voices who are rethinking existing structures and celebrating a more inclusive future," said Zoë Ryan, Daniel W. Dietrich, II Director. "It is gratifying to be working with guest curators Cole Akers and Alex Klein, former curator at ICA, whose vision for this exhibition furthers our mission and program as a launchpad for exciting new work. Additionally, ICA is proud to collaborate with guest curator Monique Long, an incredible thought leader in our region, on the first solo exhibition dedicated to the work of Philly-based artist David Antonio Cruz."
