As dusk fell on the Saturday before Christmas of 1927, two Coast Guardsmen stationed at Wood End in Provincetown noticed the periscope of a Navy submarine breaking the surface of the water. Within minutes, the USCG cutter Hiram Paulding had rammed the S-4. Tragically, the S-4 and its entire crew were lost in 102 feet of water.

David Robinson's great, great uncle, Thomas Eadie, served as Chief Diver of the S-4 rescue and recovery effort and was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroism in saving a fellow USN diver who became badly entangled in the sub's wreckage. The story of the S-4's recovery is a personal one for David and is intertwined with his family's multi-generational history of professional diving.

David Robinson is the Director and Chief Archaeologist for the Massachusetts Board of Underwater Archaeological Resouces (BUAR).
