Congratulations to Barbara Grad, Keith Maddy, and Elaine Spatz-Rabinowitz on receiving the
2022 Massachusetts Cultural Council Artist Fellowship

Barbara Grad

Born in Chicago, Barbara Grad received her BFA and MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. An accomplished artist, Grad is a Professor Emeritus at Massachusetts College of Art and Design. Recent solo exhibitions include the Howard Yezerski Gallery, Boston, MA, The Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City, MO, and The Danforth Museum of Art, Framingham, MA. and Findlay Galleries in Palm Beach, FL. Her work is in various private and public collections, including the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Danforth Museum of Art, Fidelity Investments, and Wellington Management, Grad’s many honors include grants, awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, Massachusetts Foundation and Cultural Council Grants, New England for the Arts NEA, MassArt Foundation, the Ballinglen Arts Foundation, Ireland, and the Jentel Foundation. The artist currently lives and works in Wayland, Massachusetts.

Keith Maddy

Keith is also the recipient of the 2019 People’s Choice Award, Young Masters Art Prize at Cynthia Corbett Gallery, London, England.   He received a 2017 grant from the Artist’s Resource Trust and a 2016 Finalist award in Drawing & Printmaking from the Massachusetts Cultural Council.  He has been recognized by the International Art Critics Association for the exhibit Surrounded at the Brickbottom Gallery in Somerville, in which he both participated and co-curated, and has exhibited extensively in the greater Boston area and throughout New England. He is in private collections globally, including Fidelity Investments and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Elaine Spatz-Rabinowitz

Elaine Spatz-Rabinowitz has been exhibiting with the Howard Yezerski Gallery since 1989. She is the recipient of both Guggenheim and Bunting (Radcliffe Institute) Fellowships, as well as being a five-time winner from he Mass Cultural Council – having just won a 2022 Fellowship in Painting. Her work is in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Rose Art Museum, the Addison Gallery of American Art, and the deCordova Museum among other public and private collections. It will soon be included in “A World Within: Art by Women from the Permanent Collection,” at the Huntsville Museum of Art in Huntsville, Alabama Spatz-Rabinowitz is Professor of art Emeritus of Wellesley College and continues to teach painting at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts @ Tufts University. She has shown in New York City at the O.K. Harris Gallery, Markel Fine Arts, and the ACA Galleries. She has also designed opera sets for Peter Sellars and other directors, and made a video in collaboration with a contemporary sound artist; but she is best known for her hybrid works on cast, pigmented plaster that combine sculptural relief, oil painting and—most recently—photographic emulsions from her 2013 trip to the Arctic Circle.
