Third Police Precinct Demolished

Today, the City of Albany lost a venerable old friend … the Third Police Precinct on North Pearl Street, built in 1906 and designed by Albany architect Walter Hunter Van Guysling.  This particular building has sat vacant for decades with a large number of well-meaning, but unprepared owners who did little to stabilize, restore, renovate or properly mothball the property to keep it weather tight.

This property was one of our frequent technical service recipients from HAF. We worked with the majority of the owners and countless interested parties to help them form a viable project. The severely deteriorated condition and costly abatement compounded the problems for the already endangered building. The Precinct Building has long been on HAF’s Endanger “Dirty Dozen” watch list.  For more information on this property:  https://www.historic-albany.org/2019-dirty-dozen

As of this afternoon, HAF has not seen an official structural report, so we are unable to comment on whatever failure caused today’s emergency demolition.  We will make a future update as we gather information.

What's New in the Warehouse?

Exceptional Eastlake…

With its simple yet bold design featuring rectilinearity, turned spindle-and-spool posts, and geometric incised-line decorations, this handsome circa 1870s wood mantel is a quintessential example of the Eastlake design that was just emerging at the time in the wake of Englishman Charles Eastlake’s book “Hints on Household Taste in Furniture.”

While Eastlake had advocated for a return to craftsman-made furniture—where the skill and pride of individual makers was celebrated—his predilection for simpler designs lacking much of the frippery of other Victorian examples made them easier to mass produce.

Nevertheless, Eastlake’s ideas contributed to the Arts and Crafts Movement and resulted in some truly wonderful pieces, like this one which is in truly excellent condition.

Special thanks to the family of one of Historic Albany Foundation’s board members for their generous donation of this special mantel!
