Plein Air Painting For #Feast2022

Bid on a painting created live...

As a special treat for #Feast2022, local artist Julia Durgee will be creating a piece of the historic Shaker barn Plein Air on site. Guests will be able to see her working on this painting in person throughout the evening, with the winner taking home the finished product.

You may have seen Julia's work at Built 2021 of the 'Free Food Fridge @ the Free School" which was a very popular item. For more about Julia, check out our recent blog post here.

What is Plein Air Painting?

"the practice of painting landscape pictures out-of-doors; more loosely, the achievement of an intense impression of the open air (French: plein air) in a landscape painting..."

Free 20 Minute Tours

Buildings are the stories of people - the ones who designed them, built them, lived in them, used them, worked in them.  48 Hudson is no different.  Take a look at this wooden post, positioned perfectly by the phone to write down the order and phone numbers when the 48 housed Saul's Restaurant Supply from 1935 until the 90s.

Want to know more about 48 Hudson which dates back to 1728? Join us for a free 20-minute tour this summer evening!

What's New in the Warehouse?

When Mary Kelly donated this playhouse to the Warehouse, we were bowled over by what she was entrusting to us. Having been handcrafted–porches to balustrades–by her grandfather in 1907, this work of art had been kept safe for generations, and now it was decided that it was time to pass it along to another family to care for and dream over. What Mary’s grandfather was able to create–the structure, the level of detail, the precision–is a wonder, especially when she tells us that he only got one day off each week from his job manning the tower in a Pennsylvania Railroad yard.

Built in the Italianate style in vogue from the 1840s to the 1890s, this all-wood playhouse measures 24” across, 29” deep, and 24” tall and features 26 real-glass windows and a skylight; eight rooms, including one with a mantel; a staircase; and front and back porches with working doors. A lift-off hip roof and removable floor sections allow the inside of the house to be explored.

The other thing we realized when Mary donated the playhouse was how perfectly emblematic of what we do here at the Historic Albany Foundation it is: preserving and teaching about the old buildings that have become part of our lives and so many lives before.

And because of this and how special Mary’s family’s playhouse is, we’ve decided to celebrate it by making it one of the crown jewels in the virtual auction that we are holding in conjunction with our annual Feast gala this year.

The event will be held at the picturesque and storied Shaker Heritage Society in Albany on June 18th, 2022. Bidding will open online on June 10th and end at 10 pm on the evening of Feast.

Inside the junkyard of architectural gems

"Upstate New York is home to not one but two such pro-social salvage yards. Indeed, Holland used to run the other, which is located in the state’s capital. Its current head is Pamela Howard, who oversees the 12,000 sq ft salvage site. The Historic Albany Foundation relies on resale to provide between one-third and one-half of the funding for its six-person operation..."

Focus on History: Fort Plain native keeps Dutch heritage alive

"His career has been spent translating Old Dutch documents from the New Netherland Colony, which included cities now called Albany and New York City.  Old Dutch is hard to understand even for people fluent in modern Dutch. Many surviving hand written documents are barely legible.

Gehring works in Albany as director of the New Netherland Research Center housed at the New York State Library.
