Gleason Public Library Latest - September 2022

DIRECTOR'S NOTE

Happy back-to-school for Carlisle students! We're excited to welcome our friends back from summer vacation. For new kindergartners, if you don't have your own library card yet, we would love to help you sign up for one, either at our special kindergarten library card event, or any time at the main circulation desk. For older kids, since we may have some students who are coming to the Gleason after school independently for the first time this year, I wanted to share some information for families:

Kids age 9 and up are welcome to visit the Library on their own; kids 8 and under should be accompanied by an adult.

Make sure that your kids have any phone numbers that they may need. We do not have a public phone, but patrons without a cell phone may use the Library phone for brief calls, or ask Library staff to make a brief call for them.

Library staff do not monitor who comes in and out of the library or what they do while they are here, as long as they are following library policies and being considerate of other people in the library. The same rules and privileges, including for public computer use, apply to people of all ages.

Eating food or candy is not permitted inside the Library; covered drinks are okay.

If you have any questions, please ask; we're looking forward to a good school year!

-Martha

WHEELS ON THE FARM STORY TIME
Tuesday, September 13 - 10 a.m.
Friday, September 17 - 10 a.m.
Join us for story time with Miss Jenn at Clark Farm! What goes round and round on the farmyard and helps the farmer plow and plant? How does a tractor bucket help lift heavy loads? We’ll read fun farm-themed tales together and explore the tractors and other vehicles around the farm. Be sure to register for one of our two sessions of this story time as we learn about the specialized farm tools and vehicles used over at Clark Farm. This story time is designed for children ages 3 through 6. "Dress for the weather, dress for the farm"...it could be muddy so plan to wear your boots for this program!

So that more families may participate in the farm fun, we have booked two sessions of Wheels on the Farm Story time. Please make sure to be aware of which of the two sessions for which you are registering.

This event is made possible by our wonderful Friends of the Gleason Public Library.

Register online for a watercolor postcard kit and pick it up any time between Friday, September 2 at 10 a.m. and Tuesday, September 6 at 9 p.m. via in-person or curbside pickup. This should provide time to pop your postcards in the mail so they can arrive by Grandparents' Day. To reserve your kit, please register here. This kit includes a palette of 16 watercolor paints, a watercolor brush, and two watercolor postcards. This craft is for ages 3 and up with help from an adult. ADULTS

THE FAMILY ROE: AN AMERICAN STORY, WITH JOSHUA PRAGER
Monday, September 19 | 7 p.m.
This is a Zoom program. To register for this event and receive the Zoom information, click HERE. Registration will remain open until the program start time. An email confirmation with the Zoom link will be sent from the Morrill Memorial Library in Norwood upon completion of registration. Please be sure to check your spam folder in case it lands there.**

Join investigative journalist Joshua Prager for a talk on his deeply researched book, The Family Roe: An American Story. With abortion rights poised to fall, The Family Roe, which was named a finalist for the 2022 Pulitzer Prize, offers extraordinary insight into the Supreme Court’s most divisive case and its plaintiff, Norma McCorvey.

The Family Roe is an engrossing family saga that confronts a half-century of propaganda and myth. Prager spent years with Norma; discovered her personal papers, a previously unseen trove; and witnessed her final moments. He also found the unknown Roe baby, Shelley Thornton, whose conception occasioned the lawsuit. Prager’s profile of Thornton for the Atlantic, adapted from the book, made worldwide front-page news. Hailed by critics on both sides of the debate, Prager’s astonishing book helps us to look with honest eyes at the five decades of struggle that brought us to where we are today.

Joshua Prager has written for the Atlantic, Vanity Fair, the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. A former Nieman Fellow at Harvard, he is the author of The Echoing Green, a Washington Post Best Book of the Year.

We are delighted to welcome Tiziana Dearing, host of Radio Boston, as our moderator.
