GCS Returns to Four-Day Work Week

Modified Schedule has saved more than $3.2 million over the last 11 summers

Greensboro, N.C. – Starting Tuesday, June 21, Guilford County Schools employees will begin a modified work week for the summer months. Employees will work 10 hours a day, four days a week, and will be off on Fridays. In the past 11 summers, the modified schedule has saved GCS more than $3.2 million by limiting utility use on summer days and ensuring employees are aware of other energy-saving measures.

Beginning on June 21, all 11- and 12-month employees will follow the modified schedule, working from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and will be off on Fridays. School offices will be open to the public Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The summer schedule will continue through Friday, Aug. 19. GCS will return to the regular five-day, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. work week on Monday, Aug. 22.

GCS offices will be closed on June 20, in recognition of the country’s newest federal holiday, Juneteenth, which marks the day the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas were notified of their freedom on June 19, 1865. District offices will also be closed from July 4 to July 8, for the July 4 holiday.
