Hello friends & fans of the Gaylord Memorial Library,

Welcome 2023! We hope everyone had a lovely holiday season. As winter is now upon us, we want to remind you that Gaylord Memorial Library is the perfect place to warm up, browse for books, or get some work done. We have great wi-fi, two public computers available for use, and lots of events happening. All of the info is below, be sure to check it out and let us know if you have any questions or suggestions.

Spice Club
Thurs., Jan. 5 at 6:30

Want to challenge your culinary palate, find inspiration in the kitchen, and meet community members who enjoy cooking? Join our Spice Club!  This program will run from September-March with a different seasoning featured each month from Southern New England Spice Company. A gathering is held monthly on the first Thursday of the month at 6:30 for registered participants to pick up their new seasoning and have the option to stay and chat with others to brainstorm recipe ideas and check out cookbooks. 

JANUARY: BUFFALO WING SPICE (CONTAINS DAIRY)
A great blend of spices that make delicious tasting hot wings. The buffalo seasoning is bold and flavorful. Since this buffalo wing seasoning is pre-blended, you don't have to mix ingredients together yourself. Simply use this spice to coat your chicken wings before frying or baking them.
INGREDIENTS: garlic, onion, salt, cayenne pepper, butter powder (buttercream (cream, salt), buttermilk powder), vinegar powder (maltodextrin, white distilled vinegar, modified food starch, sugar, thyme.

FEBRUARY: CHICKEN SOUP SEASONING (CONTAINS MSG)
Rich in flavor, this chicken soup seasoning is a versatile ingredient and a delicious kitchen staple! With its delightfully savory taste and inviting aroma, it contains hints of onion and turmeric, and savory spices are combined to create this multipurpose chicken soup seasoning. This granulated blend is perfect for making your signature chicken soups as well as enhancing gravies and sauces with a classic flavor. To Make Broth: Stir together 1 Tbs. soup base and 2 cups boiling water.

INGREDIENTS: chicken base (maltodextrin salt, dextrose, rendered chicken fat, corn starch, onion powder, monosodium glutamate, chicken flavor (chicken broth, yeast, extract, chicken fat), natural flavoring, turmeric, disodium inosinate, disodium quanylate), salt, garlic.

VIRTUAL SIT AND STITCH WITH TIMNA TARR

Thurs., Jan. 12 from 6-8
Log in and spend an evening with your crafty neighbors. Bring your portable handwork of choice - quilting, crocheting, knitting, cross-stitch etc. - and enjoy the company of fellow slow stitchers while you work on your project from the comfort of your own home.

Timna Tarr is a professional quilter and South Hadley resident whose work has been in numerous exhibits, books, and magazines.

TAKE & MAKE CRAFT FOR TEENS/ADULTS

NEW KIT NOW AVAILABLE! Learn to create upcycled paper snowflakes from (6) square sheets of paper. Each kit includes written instructions with a photo tutorial and discarded book pages. You will need scissors, tape or glue stick, and a stapler to complete the project. Sign up to pick up your kit

Our upcycled take and make craft kits are available anytime! We have now have 9 different DIY kits to choose from – all made from discarded book and magazine pages! The supplies needed to complete each kit varies, but most are basic supplies like a glue stick, stapler, tape, and scissors. Kits are available for pickup during our regular hours Thursday-Saturday.

LEGO CLUB
Thurs., Jan. 5 and 19 from 3-6pm
Build with Lego!  If you like creating with various sizes and types of  lego bricks, stop by the library anytime between 3-6pm. Age 12 and under. No signup necessary.

BOARD GAMES & PUZZLES
Sat., Jan. 7, 10:30-11:30
Bring a friend or meet a new one at the library! Kids of all ages are invited to play board games and do puzzles in our Children's Room. No pre-registration necessary.

DROP-IN CRAFT (KIDS AGES 5+)
Thurs., Jan. 12 and 26 from 3-6pm
Visit the children's room anytime between 3-6pm and join Miss Janet for a special craft activity (for ages 5+). No registration necessary.

SATURDAY MORNING MOVIE

Join us for a showing of Bernie the Dolphin (2018) on Sat., Jan. 21 at 10:10

Synopsis: Two siblings befriend a lost dolphin named Bernie, who suddenly goes missing. They go out to find him and, in the process, uncover a scheme that would threaten their favorite beach. They kids must now try to protect the ocean and save Bernie from the bad guys and reunite him with his family.

Rating: G; Run time: 100 minutes

South Hadley Public Library is now a member of the Library Speakers Consortium, a group that produces 2-3 online best-selling author events each month. These are live events with interactive Q&A sessions where participants can ask questions directly to the author.

MHC ARTIST RESEARCH BOOK PROJECT

MHC Artist Research Book Project Exhibition
Now on display and available for checkout!

Mount Holyoke College Studio Art Department and the Gaylord Memorial Library are pleased to present Deep Dive, an exhibition showcasing artworks by students in the fall 2022 Advanced Studio course taught by Associate Professor Lisa Iglesias. Each student spent time observing and researching an artist currently on display at the Mount Holyoke College Art Museum. The students then created books of art inspired by their studies that will be circulated and available for checkout from any library in the C/W Mars network. 

The participating artists include Lillian Ding, Emily Donahue, Laura Hinojosa. Hanan Khan, Jenny Kirk, Maeve Kydd, Vivian McPherson, Sarah Miller-Bartley, Hiba Nawaid, Fiona O’Loughlin, Savannah Pérez, Mar Simon, and Sunny Wei.

IS YOUR FAMILY INTERESTED IN GARDENING?

Our resident gardener and seed librarian, Marie Rohan, is gathering a list of families interested in participating in a community garden project at the Gaylord Memorial Library for the spring of 2023. NEED WIFI? CHECK OUT A MOBILE HOTSPOT!

Borrow one of our new mobile hotspots for Internet service on the go. These small devices create a WiFi signal you can connect your device to. Hotspots can be borrowed for 3 weeks (no renewal) and must be checked out on an adult's card.

MASSACHUSETTS STATE PARK PASS

We now have passes available to borrow for MA State Parks. Each pass is valid for a MA Resident passenger vehicle. Pass must be displayed in your vehicle at all times while visiting a Massachusetts State Park facility where daily parking fees are charged. This pass is not valid for camping. Call the library at 538-5047 to check on availability.

HOMEBOUND DELIVERY

Homebound Delivery is available to South Hadley residents who have health or transportation issues that keep them from the library. Our staff at Gaylord is thrilled to be able to deliver books, movies, CDs, etc. to our community members who are not able to visit our libraries.
