Sheher, Prakriti, Devi
ISHARA ART FOUNDATION, DUBAI, UAE | THROUGH JUNE 1, 2024

James Cohan congratulates photographer Gauri Gill on her first major curatorial project, Sheher, Prakriti, Devi, at Ishara Art Foundation, Dubai, UAE. This exhibition was realized in collaboration with Sabih Ahmed, Associate Director and Curator at Ishara Art Foundation, and runs through June 1, 2024.

Ruminating on the interwoven relationship between dynamic cities, the natural environment and the inseparable sacred, the show presents twelve artists and collectives working across diverse contexts of urban, rural, domestic, communitarian, public and non-material spaces. The title, Sheher, Prakriti, Devi comes from the Hindustani terms for ‘city,' ‘nature’ and ‘deity.’ It includes works by Chamba Rumal, Chiara Camoni, Gauri Gill, Ladhki Devi, Mariam Suhail, Meera Mukherjee, Mrinalini Mukherjee, Rashmi Kaleka, Shefalee Jain, Sukanya Ghosh, Vinnie Gill and Yoshiko Crow.

In Gill’s words, “Apart from the sheer beauty and multiple truths expressed by the different artists – from the mundane to the transcendental, the gross to the subtle, and, the manmade to the sacred – through this palimpsestic and idiosyncratic exhibition, I wish to acknowledge those who have found ways to stubbornly persist in their practice, often sharing their work only within their families and local communities, completely outside the circuits and networks of professional artists, contemporary art discourse, galleries and markets… Through this gathering of insistent voices we hope to consider the dualistic worlds of the depleted and regenerative, manmade and natural, colonial and Indigenous, young and old, English and non-English, mundane and magical, absent and present.

Gauri Gill and Rajesh Vangad
Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize
THE PHOTOGRAPHERS’ GALLERY, LONDON, UK | FEBRUARY 23 - JUNE 2, 2024

James Cohan congratulates Gauri Gill and Rajesh Vangad on their nomination for the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize. The 2024 shortlisted projects all critically engage with urgent concerns, from the remnants of war and conflict, experiences of diasporic communities and decolonisation, to contested land, heritage, equality and gender. Together these artists demonstrate photography’s unique capacity to reveal what is invisible, forgotten or marginalised and imagine a path to redress.

Gauri Gill & Rajesh Vangad are shortlisted for the book Fields of Sight, 2023, published by Edition Patrick Frey. Available for purchase here.

The annual exhibition of shortlisted projects will be on view at The Photographers’ Gallery, London from February 23 to June 2, 2024 and will travel to the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation in Eschborn/Frankfurt from June 15 to September 15, 2024.
