Wine Soirée – Sunday, August 6, 2023

Our famous Wine Soirée is coming back! Please see the invitation below and mark your calendars for Sunday, August 6, 2023, from 4 to  7 pm. Since 1994 the Friends have supported the Diamond Library  with this unique fundraiser. It is always a great event for the community to gather for anafternoon and also support literacy.

There will be Stella Artois Lager beer tasting and a wide assortment of wines to taste, delicious food tasting by local restaurants such as Basil & Co.,  Encore Teppan, Fusion 2 Any 1, Nini Bakery and Roundtable Pizza. Miss Diamond Bar and her Court will again be there greeting guests and helping sell the raffle tickets as they have every year since 1994. John Jewell will supply lively and entertaining music to accompany all the festivities.

Join us to celebrate at the Diamond Bar Library and enjoy an afternoon of community celebration of literacy with music, silence, live and book auctions, and raffle. With each ticket, you will receive a souvenir wine glass. Please check our website www.dblibraryfriends.org in the future for when tickets will be available.

A First Time for Everything by Dan Santat

This is a graphic memoir based on bestselling author and Caldecott Medalist Dan Santat's middle school years and the trip to Europe that changed his life. The story was humorous, heartwarming, and relatable. Middle grade graphic novel fans will surely love it! I’ve been a huge fan of Dan Santa’s for years and am very excited that he will visit Diamond Bar Library on Saturday, June 3, 2-3pm. Dan will talk about A First Time for Everything, answer questions, and have a signing line. Please visit LACountyLibrary.org/diamond-bar-library/ for more information.

Rubi Ramos's Recipe for Success by Jessica Parra

This debut novel tells the story of seventeen-year-old, Rubi Ramos, who is trying to juggle her grades, a budding romance, and her passion for baking, all while striving for the future her immigrant parents worked so hard for. Rubi finds herself falling short of their expectations when she is waitlisted for the university, they want her to attend. When she decides to lie to her parents and find a way off the waitlist, she must decide what she wants to do with her life. This joyful and heartwarming coming of age tale has been named a Most Anticipated YA by Goodreads.

A fun read for me this month is The Wicked Sister, a novel by Karen Dionne,  This is a startling novel of psychological suspense in which two generations of sisters try to unravel the tangled relationships between nature and nurture, guilt and betrayal, love and evil.

The Cave and the Cathedral by Amir D, Aczel

Unfolding like an Indiana Jones adventure, this book explores what the ancient art found in underground caves means to us. They stretch across stone walls found in almost inaccessible underground caverns. In drawing after drawing in prehistoric caves in France and Spain that date from the Ice Age, horses, bison, bulls, and other animals—often painted in brilliant oranges, blacks, browns, and yellows—stare out into darkness, as fresh and striking today as they were when they were created, some as far back as 30,000 years ago.

The Only Woman in the Room by Marie Benedict

Hedy Lamarr was a stunning beauty, and she also possessed a stunning mind. Fleeing World War II, she escaped to Hollywood and became a famous movie star. She was also a scientist and knew a few secrets about the enemy. She had an idea that might help the country fight the Nazis…if anyone would listen to her.

Whether you are interested in Old Hollywood or World War II, there is much to learn and enjoy here.

Vicki Hoofner chose The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner for the May 22 meeting. It is a historical murder suspense set in eighteenth century London and also in the present day.

The May pick is The Narrowboat Summer by Anne Youngson

“Lovely...Another heartening story about the possibility of striking out in a new direction at any age. It is also a soothing read, especially welcome in these anxious times.” ?Christian Science Monitor)
From the author of Meet Me at the Museum, a charming novel of second chances, about three women, one dog, and the narrowboat that brings them together.
