GREAT EVENTS HAPPENING AT THE LIBRARY!

Very exciting things have happened for the Friends of the Library and Los Angeles County tLibrary this month!

Our interim Community Manager Cynthia Yu has been named our permanent Community Manager. The Friends of the Library are so happy to work with Cynthia as she has been a great support for the Friends and all the patrons of the library.   Congratulations, Cynthia!

We are honored that Assemblymember Lisa Calderon has named us as the 2023 Nonprofit of the Year for the 56th Assembly District!

Included in Ms. Calderon’s letter:  “This is the eighth year of the California Nonprofit of the Year initiative, and with nonprofits doing more than ever to help our communities, I rightfully celebrate your achievements! Once again congratulations for all you have accomplished in our communities. You have had an immense impact on the residents of the City of Diamond Bar and beyond, which will be  felt for generations to come. Thank you very much, Assemblymember Calderon.

LA County Library Recognized as a 2023 Recipient of Nation’s Highest Museum and Library Honor

National Medal for Museum and Library Service Recognizes LA County Library’s Community Contributions

The Institute of Museum and Library Services announced LA County Library was selected as one of eight recipients of the 2023 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the nation’s highest honor given to museums and libraries that make significant and exceptional contributions to their communities. Over the past 29 years, the award has celebrated institutions that are making a difference for individuals, families, and communities.

“IMLS is delighted to announce the eight worthy recipients of the 2023 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, including LA County Library.” said IMLS Director Crosby Kemper. “LA County Library meets the needs of one of the most complex and diverse communities in the nation.

FOUR SEASONS BOOK CLUB IS BACK

The Friends invite you to the Summer Book Club meeting on Saturday, July 22 at 11 am. We will meet in the Diamond Bar Library Windmill Room for a discussion of A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman. Ove, an ill-tempered, isolated retiree who spends his days enforcing block association rules and visiting his wife’s grave, has finally given up on life just as an unlikely friendship develops with his boisterous new neighbors. However, is the cynical but sympathetic curmudgeon capable of change? Join us on July 22 and let’s discuss.

Wine Soirée – Sunday, August 6, 2023

Our famous Wine Soirée is coming back! Please see the invitation below and mark your calendars for Sunday, August 6, 2023, from 4 to  7 pm. Since 1994 the Friends have supported the Diamond Library  with this unique fundraiser. It is always a great event for the community to gather for an afternoon and also support literacy.

There will be Stella Artois Lager beer tasting and a wide assortment of wines to taste, delicious food tasting by local restaurants such as Basil & Co.,  Encore Teppan, Fusion 2 Any 1, Nini Bakery and Roundtable Pizza. Miss Diamond Bar and her Court will again be there greeting guests and helping sell the raffle tickets as they have every year since 1994. John Jewell will supply lively and entertaining music to accompany all the festivities.

Co-Chairs Kathleen Newe and Tony Torng invite you to celebrate at the Diamond Bar Library and enjoy an afternoon of community celebration of literacy with music, silence, live and book auctions, and raffle. With each ticket, you will receive a souvenir wine glass. Tickets are $75 each and can be ordered at the Friends’ website www.dblibraryfriends.org. Tickets are also available at the Diamond Bar Friends’ non-profit bookstore in the Diamond Bar Library. This is the first time that we will celebrate  our Wine Soirée in the Diamond Bar Library, so capacity is more limited than at the Diamond Bar Center so please get your tickets early.

Each book and item sold in the bookstore supports the Diamond Bar Library to enlarge their reading and media collections. Improving literacy in our community one book at a time.

READ TOGETHER DIAMOND BAR 2023

Chair Rachel Kirk announces that Read Together Diamond Bar will be back this October. Read Together Diamond Bar is based on the concept of One City, One Book where everyone in the community is suggested to read one book based on universal themes and then come together to discuss and participate with interesting book discussions and various activities in the library. We have recommendations for all ages:

For adults, The Late Show by Michael Connelly

For teens, Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson

For young children, The Detective Dog by Julia Donaldson

The final event for RTDB will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2 to 3 pm where the winners of the annual student Essay Writing Contest:  How a Book Changed MY Life will be announced. Essay Contest applications will be available at the Diamond Bar Library starting on September 1 and all entries are due on Tuesday, October 31. Submissions can be mailed or dropped off at the Diamond Bar Library.

Crime fiction author Carl Vonderau (https://carlvonderau.com) will be the guest speaker on November 18. Mr. Vonderau’s new book Saving Myles will be published in August.

BOOKMARK CONTEST WINNER IN DIAMOND BAR

Our young customer Vera Kwan was selected as a winner for the library's 43rd Annual Bookmark Contest. It'd be great if you could help share this great news in the FOL eNewsletter. Thank you so much!

 

Since 1980, LA County Library has offered the Annual Bookmark Contest for young people from kindergarten through 12th grade to celebrate creativity and the joy of reading. Last fall, the library received about 10,000 original bookmark designs for its 43rd Annual Bookmark Contest. After many discussions and difficult decisions, and with the support of the County of Los Angeles Board of Supervisors, the library honored twenty winners on Apr 25, 2023. Vera Kwan, a fifth grader from Evergreen Elementary in Diamond Bar, was announced the winner of the First District Grades 3 – 5 category! Vera loves reading because it broadens her imagination, and drawing because it helps put her imagined creations on paper. When she grows up, she wants to be a doctor, scientist, and astronaut to help our world a better place. Congratulations, Vera!

A First Time for Everything by Dan Santat

This is a graphic memoir based on bestselling author and Caldecott Medalist Dan Santat's middle school years and the trip to Europe that changed his life. The story was humorous, heartwarming, and relatable. Middle grade graphic novel fans will surely love it! I’ve been a huge fan of Dan Santa’s for years and am very excited that he will visit Diamond Bar Library on Saturday, June 3, 2-3pm. Rubi Ramos's Recipe for Success by Jessica Parra 

This debut novel tells the story of seventeen-year-old Rubi Ramos, who is trying to juggle her grades, a budding romance, and her passion for baking, all while striving for the future her immigrant parents worked so hard for. Rubi finds herself falling short of their expectations when she is waitlisted for the university, they want her to attend. Vicki Hoofner chose The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner for the May 22 meeting. It is a historical murder suspense set in eighteenth century London and also in the present day.

Create a Self-Portrait

Join us at the library for a fun hour of creativity where you will learn the age-old art and tradition of self-portraits then create your own self-portrait to take home. Art instructor Claudia Hindu will lead you through this fascinating artistic process. For Ages 13-17. Registration required.
